Okay, using this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278

I downloaded the following:
Frankenstein XWKI8 firmware
The stock kernel for the above (for rooting)
And the Middle East OJVKF3 CSC

Is that correct, or is there a better one for SA?

EDIT: I want to keep it as close to latest official rom as possible before i start installing custom roms

I vote to do it, you won't be disappointed. The 2.3.3 was released for our region on xda so you can always go back if you feel the need. Currently on 2.3.5

Are sure this is not the 2.3.4 that was released ?

Yes it is correct. Completely stock besides the csc is our region so kies won't recognise. And your counter won't go up. Proceed with caution. Follow instructions precisely.

I could be wrong but that was the kernal that came with my phone. Almost sure its 2.3.3

This is my root/flash procedure.

1. Get Root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
2. Install Titanium Back and do a backup of all user apps. https://market.android.com/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup&hl=en and https://market.android.com/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackupPro&hl=en
3. Flash ROM: http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=galaxys2 (Get the latest nightly).
4. Restore use apps and data using Titanium.
5. Flash Kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1263838

You can flash kernels and modems via the Darky ROM tool from the market (https://market.android.com/details?...51bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5maWNldG8uZGFya3lyb20yIl0. ) instead of Odin if you so wish.

Here is a list of modems: http://www.mediafire.com/?fnkld9swo6u99 I use KI4. Works well on local networks (Vodacom for me).

I have a jig in any case, however i might need to install the old bootloader to use it

Is there any functional difference between the old and new bootloaders?

Nice! Thanks!
You should start a new topic and get a mod to sticky it, im sure this is the same procedure for any android device? Step 3 can be substituted for whatever rom you prefer.
The XDA forums are a bit confusing to newbies.

My cover I bought from Dealextreme for $2.70 is still in perfect condition. I don't know why you guys want to buy such expensive covers.

Ye. Just make sure that whatever ROM is substituted will support the kernel in step 5. At the current release 2.1b13, most of the popular ones are supported so all should be good.
The Siyah kernel is by far the best kernel available at the moment. Gok knows his stuff.

He is soon going to release a version of Siyah that enables dual booting :) So you can run two ROM's at a time. I can see a few uses for a feature like this.

Yeah same here, both my case and screen protector cost like R20 and still in perfect condition

So the only thing that can wipe your phone is a firmware install right?
You can change your kernel and modem without losing any data?

I am loving the Omega ROM with Siyah kernel.
Nice eye-candy, good speed and battery life. Haven't picked up any bugs or problems yet.

I disabled data connections on my phone and my battery life has improved beyond belief. Even WIFI uses less battery than data. Going to flash XXKI4 Stock ROM maybe today or tomorrow.

I use wifi 24/7 on my device. When out of wifi range it auto switches to data and back to wifi again when back in range of wifi (office and home).
Also, when wifi disconnects and data connects, my bluetooth enables. Wifi off is the trigger for bluetooth on and wifi on is the trigger for bluetooth off. I only use Bluetooth in the car so it is fitting for bluetooth to only enable when wifi off. I use Tasker to handle these triggers. Handy app for all sorts of auto configs on your device.

So far, 10 hours off charge. 35% screen on time. Sitting at 68% still.

If you are not seeing aroun 1.5 to 2 days of moderate use then you don't have a good setup :)

Oh ye... I use Voltage Control (from the market) to set my CPU settings. I use SIO scheduler and SmartAssV2 Governor. I don't mess with the voltages though nor do I O/C.

Hi Mike

Does flashing this Kernel also remove the yellow triangle?

I got a jig off eBay for $4 or something to do this. There are ways to get rid of the yellow triangle by using the TAR version of the kernel via Odin. Not tried it though cause of the jig.

Have you found this Kernel to work very will with CM7?
Every second day or so I download and flash the latest CM7 nightly and use it with the latest release of Siyah. The two work VERY nicely together. Device is smooth as anything and battery just goes on and on and on dude. Very good combo CM7 and Siyah.

Do you find speed improvements with this Kernel?
Extremely noticable. And each new beta release of Siyah improves it further dude. Just make sure you install Voltage Control from the market, set the sheduler to SIO and CPU Governor to SmartAssV2. I find this is the best combo for battery/performance balacing. When you set the settings, apply them then press menu and "Save as boot settings" to have the settings applied across boots.

Thanks for your awesome help on this thread, hey. :)
Anytime dude :)

Rooted last night, and made 3 different backups of my data:
KIES
Titanium Backup Free
CWM (I think this only does the ROM not the apps?)

I really don't wanna lose anything.

Will flash stock 2.3.5, root again and install siyah kernel tonight :D
