A friend notified me that if I intend to flash the rom I'll need to get a jig to reset the counter for warranty protection. Can you confirm that?

Yes. It works with the old bootloader, so make sure you download ROMs that uses the old bootloader. The new bootloader renders the jig useless.

Hi guys, I have an issue on my S2 I cant seem to resolve. If I select GSM only in settings, the phone works perfectly and network signal mostly shows 4 bars. If I select to use both GSM and WCDMA in order to enable 3g etc, the signal mostly stays on 2 bars and drops to 0 at times when on 3g or H+ and if someone tries to call me it says number unavailable. I am on MTN btw. Anyone know what this problem may be? Thanks in advance

I also have the MTN one. Did you buy it at MTN or another network?Mine is currently on GSM/WCDMA(Auto) and I have no problems. Don't lose signal or anything.

Did you root the phone?Or install a custom rom? That could be the problem because change settings or deleting some apps in root mode

No, phone is as it came. Its from UK though. Don't know if that makes a difference. Generally the signal is weak. Goes to 0 very often.could the phone be faulty?

Don't think the phone is faulty. What is ur csc code? That could be the problem. The samsungs here in RSA runs on OJV or OJC csc codes while UK phones run on XEU. But that shouldnt cause the problem

Check you csc code by dialing *#1234# and post it

Got my S2 from MTN and it was XEU before it got rooted and ROMed.

Its i9100O2UKG2. Sorry didn't know which part to omit.

It's fine. As u can see your phone is has O2 in the UK csc. Do u see the O2 logo when u boot up your samsung or any other uk software on the phone? If not then device is unbranded and you can flash a new rom from xda with SA csc. Ask someone to confirm on xda if your device is unbranded. But if you want to be safe you need to take it to samsung ask them to flash the current 2.3.3 gingerbread rom(if your device is still on 2.3.3) otherwise head over to xda and flash an official rom. It will work well then. If you can send sms'es and mms'es and make calls then there's no need to change.

If your device is unbranded. Follow instructions on xda by downloading the 2.3.5 rom(frankenstein KI8) and flash middle east csc OJVKF3 (For south africa networks) package.

Yes it does have the O2 logo when it boots. I will get Samsung to flash the phone if that helps. I also switched off packet data to check if the signal was better without data. Its still not so great. Also noticed sometimes i cannot hear the other person too well or vice versa.

Ok so it is branded. I think that is the problem. If samsung cannot unbrand phones or if you want to unbrand it yourself by flashing a different rom. Follow steps here(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278) . Keep in mind that I accept no damage or risk involved with flashing your phone. Also follow Q&A to find out if u allowed to flash unbranded software on a branded phone. You will need to return to original firmware for warranty purposes though.

Great stuff. Thanks for the help. Will ask Samsung before I attempt to do it myself and get back with my progress.

While we are discussing "branded"; I am considering getting a SGII from Vodacom. Are they branded? Also, will it be easy to update to Ice Cream Sandwich?

I am not too sure as most people have the MTN version over at xda because its better value for money on contract. I don't think it is branded though. The ICS update will come out in November for SGSII according to Samsung Centre but i am doubtful it will happen. With regards to updates, Samsung Kies is horrible at releasing updates. I think we are still waiting on 2.3.4. SGSII will get ICS its just a matter of when.

Edit : the vodacom version is branded

Vodacom logo comes up on start-up along with some pre-loaded Vodacom wallpapers but that's pretty much it.

Agreed, quite liked those nice red wallpapers.
