Can someone explain why I need Odin (Mobile pro) when I already have CWM?

You do not need the pro version. I keep both. Install MO and CWM, check their features and decide for yourself which you want to keep. There are a number of differences.

Could It be that I have a funky ICS.tar? When I unzip the main ICS folder it creates a .tar.md5 file which is 0mb in size. Could this be the problem?

Definitely at least part of the problem. The tar.md5 file should be something like 350Mb, if I recall correctly. Try re-downloading the compressed version (or re-extracting with the most recent 7Zip - earlier versions have had issues).

Thanks Jacques. Re-downloading didn't fix the problem. I'll try a newer version of 7zip ;)

OK, so this thread got really huge. My camera has stopped focussing (For a while now, not a software issue). I need to send it back to MTN for repairs. I have been advised to flash back to Stock Gingerbread ROM. Of course, my backups with ClockWordMod are not working, so I need a stock MTN Gingerbread 2.3.3/4 ROM from MTN to Flash, so I can send it back to MTN for repairs. I have seen a link to the ROMs somewhere, but for the life of me, Google is not my friend today. Any ideas?

I shouldn't think this is necessary. There is no body damage, it just stopped working one day. Anyone from MTN care to comment?

Hi all, I have had my Galaxy S2 since October 2011 and always wanted to update my firmware but was too afraid to damage my baby. ;-) Well I finally decided to take the plunge and update to 2.3.6 with XILA2 using Odin. I am however a severe noob in this regard and after much research I have just a couple of questions to make sure I understand everything. The specific XILA2 Firmware I want to use is from the link in the XDA thread:

GT-9100/Firmwares/Unbranded/Italy/GT-I9100_ITV_I9100XILA2_I9100XWKI1_I9100OXIKK1.7z

I only want to update my firmware and is not interested in rooting my phone as of yet, so I want to make sure, am I only going to use the first above file or am I also going to need the XILA2 Stock Kernel file given below:

GT-9100/Kernels/Kernel_I9100XILA2.7z

Assuming I only need the first file I also want to make sure that I have the right sequence for how the Flashing process is going to proceed :

1. Download the first file and extract
2. Reboot my phone to download mode
3. Open Odin 1.85
4. Use PDA button and browse to my extracted .tar file
5. Do not tick anything else
6. Connect USB cable and wait for ID:COM section to turn yellow
7. Click start
8. Wait for it to finish and for phone to boot up again by itself
9. Finished!

At this point, is my phone now rooted and do I now have to go through the whole process again with the second file I mentioned to unroot the phone to retain my warranty?
Also do I have to have Kies on my computer to do the upgrade, as I understand it does not like Odin that much? Do I need to make backups of my stuff and what would be the best program for an unrooted phone? And lastly, do I ever through this whole process have to restore factory settings, clear cache or something similar to that?

Sorry for the wall of text, I just want to make double sure before I take the plunge into awesomeness!
Thanks in advance!

Try a search on XDA

The procedure sounds fine. Just do it step by step following Intratech's instructions and you should be okay.

No your phone is only rooted once you install a rooted kernel. The FW you flash should be stock (except if you got it from the frankenstein section). So after flashing with XILA2 FW, your phone is not rooted yet. You do not need to flash the Stock kernel file. Intratech includes that only when you have to unroot your phone - not sure why because flashing the FW again will also unroot it. The benefit of using the kernel file might be to save time ... ??? ... ???

Your method will work 100%.

I used the 2.3.6 Gingerbread ROM from the Netherlands (XEN) and currently using the 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich ROM from the Netherlands (XEN again). Both work 100% with Vodacom.

I'm using the LP7 ROM for ICS and used the KI4 ROM for Gingerbread.

Siyah kernel has that function.

It's called BLN (Back Light Notification).
You need to install a kernel that supports BLN - like Siyah.
