Assuming you're already rooted and have CWM installed, those are the correct steps imo to install a new ROM. Remember you have to download the appropriate GApps (The Google applications, because the can't be bundled with ROM's, for the specific Android version you are installing) and place this on the root of the SD card. After flashing the ROM in CWM, flash the GApps with the same method before rebooting.

Regarding the root procedure, there are different method. I downloaded a root version of CWM and flashed it to the phone with Odin. It rooted the phone automatically and installed CWM. From there I proceeded with the flashing of the ROM. I can't find the guide now, but I'm not an expert at rooting unfortunately. The other guys would be able to assist you further.

You could look at the guide from Cyonogen Mod. I trust them.

You don't have to worry about the kernel, as I remember CWM comes with it's one kernel that roots the phone. That's what happened to me.
 
Does anybody here use the latest CM10.2 nightly's? I'm currently on cm-10.1.3-RC2-i9100.zip because it's nice and stable. People had a lot of issues with CM10.2 breaking there recovery etc. I had graphical issues en crashed on the camera and focal.

Has it gotten any better?
 
@Mineer, I can't help right now, but even if you search this thread, you will find the steps to installing roms/fw and info on modified kernels. If you have stock JB already installed, then head over to XDA and search for Philz kernel for the S2. Download the correct version and flash in recovery. Your phone will be rooted

Yip pretty much. It's faster but the S2 is not noticeably slower for most applications. Size wise maybe slightly too big for my hands but I'm typing this one hand no problem. Was a bit more "slippery" due to being slightly wider yet thinner. A cover sorted that out. I'm glad I went for it over the note 2.

Yep. Much better now.
 
k gapps and cm-10.1.2 is nearly done one last noob question,

will I loose my apps installed already, actually I care just for one app on my phone which is swype:love:. or will I have to accept the loss ?

Yes, you will have to wipe everything. Not that hard to install Swype once you're up and running again though.

k so rooting went easy peasy very nice link there Saguran :love:
but changing or swapping out the rom not so well, good thing they made it idiot proof,


not feeling any more adventurous I decided to go with the latest stable release cm-10.1.2-i9100g I got from here

after I backed up and then wiped the data tried installing the CyanogenMod 10 ROM
gave me an error assert failed: getprop something something tried again and again
gapps installed easily I did this just to test the "theory"

Good lord had a heart attack when installing the backup up I made earlier, kept saying MD5 check sum error, tried multiple times still the same. decided to call on divine intervention (praying really hard) and the by the powers that be the phone is back to it normal self
not sure where I went wrong. maybe its the release I downloaded ?
while googleing the error msg I got this website

My one says something slightly different to the error msg this guy got but mostly the same, I am thinking of trying it out unless you guys got some expert advice.
I will wait for a reply before attempting it again my heart can't handle the stress

Correct. My Raspberry pi uses the S2's SD card and make no difference to flashing roms without it (not sure about unofficial though).
 
cool thanks , hmmm no stable releases:( oh well if I am gonna keep this phone I might as well learn the tricks
hoping the battery life is worth the effort
