Swift, I flashed CF-Root. Will SetCPU not work with that kernel? Thanks for the link, looks interesting

Based on what I know, you can't use setcpu on a stock kernel, and essentially that is what the cf root kernel is, but just with the other stuff added. Tegrak is for use with stock kernels.

Do give it a go and let us know. :)

Thanks for the great post Riaan, I am sure it will help many people here, noobs or not.

Just got mine yesterday from Fourways mall - been following this thread for a while though. Thanks to all who posted with their experiences, you make this phone more valuable ;-)

I charged the phone fully and then considered starting to set it up to taste while I waited for a Jig order, but just couldn't wait and didn't want, so went ahead with root and VillianROM flash. I wouldn't have been brave enough if it wasn't for this thread with so many of you flashing, the option of driving to Pretoria and purchasing the resistors to build a quick jig if things went wrong (never knew where to buy such things) and reading the tutorials and downloading the software to prepare well.

I followed the XDA tutorial here, I'm a newbie, but I'm sure there are other newbies to flashing phones too and hope this helps - it worked for me (pretty much a repeat of the tutorial in different words and with links a bit more handy):

Step 0: Before I Started

  • I read the tutorial through and downloaded all the needed files in folders named Step 1, Step 2, etc.

Step 1 - Flashing CF-Root

Step 2 - VillainROM

  • I didn't worry about losing data on the phone, as all my contacts were already Google Contacts and the phone was new.
  • I got the newest VillianROM from here. Currently the newest is VillainROM-2.1-signed.zip.
  • I copied VillainROM-2.1-signed.zip to the SD Card (plugged in the phone and copied it in explorer).
  • I unplugged and powered off the phone.
  • I powered on the phone in ClockWorkMod (CWM) mode (while off, hold these buttons together, pressing them in order: volume up, home, power.)
In CWM mode, use volume up/down for up/down, home for select and power for cancel or back.
  • I selected "backup and restore" -> "Backup"
  • I selected "wipe data/factory reset" and confirmed
  • I selected "wipe cache partition" and confirmed
  • I selected "install zip from sdcard" -> "choose zip from sdcard" -> "external_sd/" -> "VillainROM-2.1-signed.zip"
  • I selected "reboot system now"
  • Something evil, red and green was born in my palm.

Step 3 - Updating CF-Root Kernel

  • On the VillianROM page, I saw that the current version of it (2.1) is based on KG2, so I downloaded CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KG2-v4.1-CWM4.zip.
  • And that the newest VillainTweaks is (v.1.3.1) which I also downloaded.
  • I copied CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KG2-v4.1-CWM4.zip and SGS2-v1.3.1.apk to the SD Card (plugged in the phone and copied it in explorer).
  • I went to Applications -> My Files -> external_sd -> SGS2-v1.3.1.apk, set to allow unsigned apps, and installed the VillianTweaks.
  • Here I had a bit of a problem that led to me having to redo step 2. I was now supposed to run the CWM app, but when I did, I was distracted and when asked if I want it to have root privileges I declined where I should have granted them. So heads up:
  • I went to Applications -> CWM -> Flash kernel -> external_hd -> CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KG2-v4.1-CWM4.zip then rebooted.
  • That was it for me. I tried step 4, but it did nothing for me.

Took less than an hour (also less than writing this post) ;-)

You don't need the original kernel. Only flash it if you want to remove the yellow triangle upon boot. Also, you don't need the frankenstein firmware as you have the other files.

I definitely have to agree with CodeMaster, Drive and Walk is a piece of crap. Google maps is better. I just have to install Brut Maps. I forgot to do it. Are you sure all your apps were selected for the batch operation? I'm busy uploading D&W for you now.

You will have to ask Flikka to confirm as I think he flashed the non-wipe version.

Thats the link for KG2 2.3.4 Non Wipe. Just put the tar file in PDA section of Odin and flash.

If you want to root go to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
In post 4 you will see the CF-Root for KG2 labeled XX_OXA_KG2 or Use the link that swift provided and flash the ninphetamine kernel

I installed ninphetamine kernel via CWM, went smoothly, installed SetCPU to test and it works, I can OC to 1.6ghz so I can confirm that the kernel is working

I cant figure out VillainTweaks, Swift can you give me a run down. I have it installed though

Subway, go into TiBackup "Backup & Restore" tab.
Scroll all the way down, and keep a lookout for app names that look like this - [-]Drive 'n Walk[/-] and see if your missing apps are there.
Restore as necessary.

OK, so I got bored quickly with VillianRom.
I always kept an eye on Cognition, waiting for 1.20 to go live. I like the idea that they stuck with the ninphetamine, as I think this will be one of the favorite kernels - plus it now has full cifs support. (plus SetCPU for later :D ) Will let you all know what I think of Cognition in a couple of days, since it doesn't look like anyone else here has tried this ROM.

Flikka, I didn't install the tweaks yet.

Awesome stuff CodeMaster.

Did another restore with cwm, everything is back the way it was, including kernel, lol, all that and I'm back on 2.3.3 ke7, modem stayed on kg2 and still rooted, so not all for naught. I wish I had a better idea of what I was doing, feels a bit like poking round in the dark.

Drive and walk is a system app so you will have to back it up manually as it won't backup with your user apps.

ok then, seems like I got a lil side tracked after downloading some games, in particular drag racing... still have other games to "test" out but jeez that Drag Racing game is HOT.
Def. one to get if you like that kinda game...

As for the flashing, I think I'll start that tomorrow night again after work... want to wait for CF-Root for KG3, instead of flashing KG2 CF-Root....

Cheers

If you are going to install VillainROM or w/e ROM you want just flash KG2 and install the ROM you want as the ROM's atm only support KG2. So by doing this you are ready for when they update the ROM to KG3 and just install the update (that doesnt require a wipe).

This is my main reason I did not install KG3 and then have to wait to install a custom ROM as that's just stupid. Ninphetamine-2.0.1 is awesome, will stay with this kernel from now on and not CF-Root, also depends if Ninphetamine gets updated quickly as CF-Root is for ROM support etc.

Aaargh its taking like 6 hours ac charging to get a full charge... this is ridiculous. I think I have a faulty device!!

Thanks. So you can confirm nothing was removed after installing the non-wipe?

That's unusual. Should only take half of that time to charge.
