Can someone please explain whats the difference between the kernel and the firmware??

Also, if my PDA version number is i9100XWKE7, can I upgrade to i9100XXKG5?

I want to use the official firmware found here: xda-developer forum

And is it possible to root without using frankenstein firmware?

You can think of the kernel as kind of the middleman between the operating system and the hardware.
The kernel's primary purpose is to manage the device's resources and allow other programs to run and use these resources. Ie. CPU, memory and IO devices such as keypad, touch screen etc.

Yes KG5 is newer than KE7, the latest is KG6. The XW and XX part of the version number is the country codes, both of them are Europe codes which is what we use as well.

So the order to flash is:

1) Flash with new XXKG5 pda and phone firmware
2) Flash with insecure kernel
3) Root
4) Flash with original XXKG5 kernel

Correct?
And I take it there is no need to flash a new recovery firmware like CWM, can just leave the stock samsung one?

It all depends on the rom you're flashing. The method on the link you posted works this way.

If you use that method and flash with odin, then there is no need to flash a kernel with CWM. But I would recommend getting CWM, easier to flash new roms (that's compatible) and you can backup and restore your roms etc.

Then I take it you recommend this instead:

1) Flash with new XXKG5 pda and phone firmware
2) Flash with CF-Root kernel
Done. No need to do the root thing manually, CF-Root already includes root, speruser, busybox (needed for setcpu right?), CWM.

Side quest: is superuser the same as root? whats the difference?

That's it :-)

Superuser is just an application that gives apps root access.

Hello there,

Cant believe how cheap stuff are on the internet, how much did you pay in total for everything? Here you pay anything between R100 - R250 for a proper silicone case.

Thanks.

I picked up the desktop dock and a windscreen mount from the Sammy shop at Vodaworld yesterday. R300 a piece.
The quality of the accessories (genuine Sammy) are testimony to the quality of the device its-self. Nice!!

So could an upgrade of the Kernal sort out some of the battery issues my buddy is having. Hes only getting 12hours of moderate usage.

only 12 hours, lol. I'm used to getting 7 hours from my blackberry storm so for me 12 hours is awesome!

But updating definitely helps, not sure about the kernel though. I updated the kernel and os and get about 28 hours. I'm on miui rom.

It could be the modem as well. I would suggest that he flashes a different ROM as well as the modem. Someone I know had the same problem and that solved it for him.

Anyone else having GPS issues? Ive waited 15 mins and still no lock... :( gonna up to KG6 tonight and maybe try out a different rom. sad tho cos I like the way my phone is setup at the mo

Nope, I'm still on KG2 and I get a lock in under 30s.

Anyone know if the Sammie accessories are available in Durban?

What app is this you used?

I get brilliant battery on mine. Well over a day. I use my device quite a bit.
Bluetooth does not stay on permanently though. I use tasker to switch it on when my wifi disconnects and off again when wifi connects again.
