Samsung Galaxy S2

Hi guys

I've been following this thread for about a month now in anticipation of my upgrade.

It finally happened, and I am VERY happy to say that my baby is sleeping on the charger at the moment... :)

This thread has become...vast. Would it be possible for the experienced flashers (no giggling) to create a thread specifically for flashing the SGS2, and a brief guide on the kernel, modem, pda and whatnots that are so confusing? Perhaps with sections on rooting, flashing a kernel, installing a ROM, and reverting the phone back to the "factory defaults"?

I've spent a good 3 hours reading up and googling on the subject, but a lot of the articles assume a fair amount of knowledge. I'm quite understandably daunted by the prospect of bricking this beauty, and would appreciate the experience of the community!

Thanks in advance - looking forward to flashing this baby. :)

That vid on how to use the jig wasn't really that helpful. If something goes wrong with your phone, do you plug that puppy in, unplug and then connect to the PC to re-install stock ROM/kernel/whatever to make it work again?

My battery usage, was on 20% so it could've went on for a bit more.
Stock ROM
Un-rooted
Wifi on when needed.
Mobile data always on.
WhatsApp and G-Talk always on.
About fifteen short calls and ten sms's.
Display brightness on automatic.
No tasker or advanced task killer, just common sense.
:)

I would say using an app like Tasker IS common sense. Do you understand its purpose?
Task killers however are not needed since Android 2.2. Prior to that they were. Perhaps you are confusing the two?

You are correct, I was confusing the two. I meant any task killer application :)

Some of you may know that the video capturing only captures the audio at 16Khz. Well, head over to this thread and then you can mod your S2, so that you can capture the audio at 44Khz :)

It does the following:

The apk replaces the stock Camera.Apk in the Galaxy S II, and has the following features:

- Allows use of the camera & camcorder at any battery life
- Records Audio in 192kbps/44.1Khz quality (CD Quality) rather than stock (64kbps/16khz quality)
- Increased Video Bitrate in 1080 and 720p modes*
- Optional No Sounds versions (for Standard and Highbit versions!). All of the features, None of the noise! Yes, even the autofocus noise is gone!

I've checked out the video comparisons and the differences are quite noticeable.

You clearly did not understand the video at all then.

Kewl beans. We are on the same page then :) And you are right, task killers are not at all necessary on our super phones.

Just flashed the following kernel --> RAGEmod v2-T27
Will post results...
Previous kernel: Ninph 2.1.1 and battery last +- 3 days 1 hr with moderate to heavy usage.

Also installed setcpu & following this setup:
people...
setCPU FTW!!!
Setup some profiles for the obvious scenarios, and you'll definitely squeeze out alot more from your phone. Here's what i have:
1. Screen off, set your CPU to, say 500MHz max
2. In call, 500MHz max
3. 00:00 - 04:00 - 500MHz max
4. battery < 20% 1GHz max
5. battery < 10% 500MHz max

So yeh, lets see how the drainage is...
Busy charging atm, had it go to 1%, lols
:)

Cool. Which kernel did you use to root it? I still haven't done mine but I will soon :p I'm gonna use HellcatDroid's kernels.

Oh yeah, btw. If you have Odin freezing (not hanging) where it's processing zimage, don't panic, just switch off the phone (pull battery out) and reboot and try it again.

I had to use my laptop as for some reason it didn't want to work on my desktop (both win7 x64) but I'm also having using mass storage / normal USB mode on my desktop, I think I have old or bad drivers from when I was experimenting with my new phone. Think a reinstall of all the drivers is in order.

Just installed Droidwall, can limit apps from using the internet on 3G or WIFI and so far it seems to block some apps ads! So now to setup a profile so various apps don't sync and chow my airtime.

Add 3G Watchdog to this and you got all you need to manage your data :)

Is there no other way to pay for Android apps other than linking your CC to Google? I haven't bought anything yet.. hav ea list of ones I wanna get, just wish I could use Paypal instead or have the cost deducted from my phone account.

Right now - no :)
Google are working on PayPal integration so that is coming.

As far as deducting from your phone account, Vodacom is launching an app store to handle this. Waiting to see the kind of content they will have for us though.

Save yourself a lot of hassle and link your CC to your Google account. :)

Do the apps stay in your market account tho? if i don't backup my phone and reinstall to a new ROM or get a new phone, are the apps still mine? Can I reinstall them as many times as I need etc; ?

Yes, the purchase is linked to your google account so you can install as many times as you like on any device you like as long as the device is also linked to your google account.
I flash around once every 2 weeks and have never lost any of my purchases.
