Samsung Galaxy S3

I cannot reiterate enough how absolutely confused I am with BBS. Absolutely nothing about it makes any sense to me and the XDA thread assumes a level of geeckery that I'm nowhere near. What exactly do I do in BBS to do this? When I go to the main BBS screen there is hardly any info until I select a drop-down and even then, I haven't the foggiest what it is I'm selecting and why...

Check if this helps you DJ:

I am somewhat impressed with this phone, but it's flimsy as hell, don't drop it, not even 20 cm. Android also seems like a very resource-hungry OS. For a device with the specs of the S3, there is still noticeable lag every now and then. I have to admit (without turning this into one of those dratted iOS versus Android threads) that I have not noticed this after working with an iPhone 5 for most of yesterday, and the iPhone 5 is only dual core.
My phone fell from a height of 75cm (put it on top of my ipad and when my back was turned it slowly slid off millimetre by millimetre) and landed on a tiled surface! Not a scratch on it thanks to the Cygnett back cover I have on it. Lucky one there that it landed the right way :p

Running 4.1.1. as downloaded OTA from Vodacom or is it Samsung SA? Basically the auto update from the carrier?
Phone is more sluggish that when i first got the phone 8 months ago, and I have that annoying lack of copy/paste bug. Admittedly I could do some cleanup and remove apps off the phone. Just not sure where to start

I dropped my device (again) yesterday when I was running and it dropped out of my pocket from hip height. I have a nice Speck cover which is hard plastic on the outside and soft gel on the inside. There is a big scuff mark on the cover but the device is perfect.

As to your second part of your post, I would suggest either factory resetting your device and starting a clean slate. Alternatively see a post of mine a few pages back and read up about rooting your device and flashing a custom rom. I simply flash a file that cleans my device (from my external SD) then I flash a new rom from my External SD and enjoy.

It didn't slide off, the iPad pushed it!

Agree completely, it's a terrible app. Both terribly user unfriendly and terribly good and detailed.

Will give you a very simplified overview of what BBS helps to acheive:
Basically there are two types of battery drain, one when you are using it (can't do anything about this) and one where you are not using it and the phone is "sleeping". While it is sleeping there are two basically two states it can be in: deep wonderful sleep or pretty much awake with it's eyes closed. We want the former and BBS can show us what processes are causing the phone to be in awake with eyes closed state.

The place to see this on BBS is on the "partial wakelocks" dropdown. This will show which processes are waking the phone up to perform a function. E.g. gmail app will take the phone out of deep sleep to check if you have any new emails. So not all partial wakelocks are bad. An example of a big problem that I solved was that I had an email app that wanted to have a constant connection to the internet even though I had told it not to not poll for email during the evening. Terrible app design. So when I put the phone into aeroplane mode this app would constantly check for an internet connection and so my phone was never in deep sleep. Solution was to adjust the app settings even more so that it wouldn't do that.

So go to that page after getting a good overnight drain from 100% and then go to the partial wakelocks page. After that google is your friend and you are more than welcome to post a screenshot of that page from your phone and I'll see what I can dig up.

Big drainers are usually the google and android services like. You're likely going to see "alarm manager" which is the OS earmarking resources for scheduled tasks especially syncing services. For me I turned off synch where I could (I don't need to synch contacts constantly when I'm only adding like one a month haha) and things improved. Another common one is "Google asynch talk" yadayada. This is not the google talk app, but rather Google services such as Google Now, Maps, Playstore update notifications etc. Playstore notifications and checking constantly for updates was a big drainer for me. I turned it off check for updates manually once in a while.

I currently have sync disabled and manually sync when I need to (using my tablet for emails etc). How do I setup my sync to ONLY sync over wifi at a specific time during the day- I don't want to turn mobile data off during that time.

Think you'll have to go advanced for that, Tasker.

Maybe there's an app just to toggle sync. Try something like juice defender, probably easier than Tasker

I set each app manually to sync once a day, and data heavy apps (like instant upload) have Wi-Fi only options.

What ROMs is everybody running?

I'm on CM10.1 nightlies at the moment but keen to give something else a try.
