SARS E-Filing 2017

Haven't done the exercise this year or last but with previous returns if I said I had no logbook I would need to pay money back to SARS, changing to yes I do have a logbook meant a payout from SARS.

Thinking. If I drive my staff to shopping Center for lunch everyday I am work , that counts as business mileage right? If so that's 6km x about 260 working days = 1500 km alone

For the log book does one also need to state private mileage ?

I've luckily never had to submit a log book. I have also noticed that it makes no real difference on your rebate. If they request a logbook in the future, I might consider not going through the trouble of submitting mileage.

I do the same with medical costs not claimed from medical aid - I did a calculation in 2014 when I had to pay for my wife's deviated septum correction costs, and I got nothing more despite the costs being about 12k in total. I upped it to about 30k just to see what the calculation does, and then to 0, and every time the rebate was exactly the same.

Do not want to be audited for 0 cents, not worth it.

Is it just me still awaiting tax calculation results? How the f do i submit without knowing what the outcome is first?
Asked Monday still waiting. Submitted Monday, still waiting...

Hmmmmm .............. my RA contributions were also not carried forward.

Spoke to a individual tax expert today, apparently there is a specific issue relating to the carry forward of Retirement Annuity contributions. Need to log a dispute (NOO) is this applies to you

Okay, so the ultimate noob question...

What is the purpose of doing a tax return? Why do you get/owe money to SARS if you've been paying tax?

I started working in Jan 2017. I pay PAYE. I did not invest in TFSA (yet). I do not pay medical aid (covered by parents). Why should I still file a tax return? Someone told me its because I paid for 2 months in the previous tax year... Is that correct?

you can get all that tax that you paid back, that's why

but it might come back to haunt you later

Don't think so. Trips that are directly linked to one’s occupation or trade are claimable as ‘business travel.’

Ok thanks for that - may just skip it for now, the damn audit is already delaying my refund.

In what manner? I do not see any downside.
My first-ever two returns through eFiling both required me to give SARS some money (previous employer must have underpaid on my tax somehow). Considering how little I was earning in my first job, that was really painful.

Ever since I got a medical aid though, it's been a fun time of the year for me :D

Did you calculate first? Bet you didn't, I'd only submit on 23 Nov 2017 if calculator showed I owed them.

This guy worked a whole 2 months for that year, I bet he gets all the PAYE tax back.

I did, but didn't think I could do anything about what I owed them. The amount was so small (like R1000) each time that'd I'd have just wasted more money to get a tax consultant to investigate it. I recall that I did complain to my employer about it, fat lot that helped.

Wow, I'm getting a lot more back than in previous years. I hope I didn't make a mistake. Everything looks fine.

:D

Lucky sod. I told my new employer's finance team just today that I'll be taking care of my tax credits myself once a year, so they don't need to do it on my behalf. At least next year I'll be in for some more fun.

I just got a email,

SARS eFiling SARS IT Assessment (IT34)

Even though I got one on Friday night after filing , but odd?
