The range of a wireless device depends mostly on the antenna that you use.

a Linksys WRT54G with a decent directional antenna can do 15km easily... more if you know what you're doing.

daff, i had a look at the linksys, it scored badly with range!

with the right antenna and LOS it can go 15km. Strange im around 3.5km away from sentech tower and I have coverage.

Yes, I have put in 15km link using 24dBi grids.
I have a few links going over 20km's.
I've even had a link from Sandton Office tower to the Voortrekker Monument.

If you use the right equipment, it is possible.

I've gained alot of experience with wireless equipment, mostly because of JaWug.
I get to play around with different equipment because I work for a Wireless hardware distributor.

A STOCK linksyswrt54g's power output is very low. But adding modified firmware such as Sveasoft's or OpenWRT to it turns it into a real little powerhouse of a box.

Plus, the new version 2.2 has great receive sensitivity.

Question, what output power can you acheive? With my Asus WL500g running Olegs Custom Firmware I can push 89mw out. But it tends to overheat and crash above 50.

It can go up to 250mW, but its not practical to use it that high.
At anything about 120mW, too much noise is introduced into the signal, which corrupts stuff.
I'm running mine happily at 100mW... It gets a big warm, but it hasn't died yet.

Hmm, much better than the Asus box for half the price. Anyways I opened my box up and found a magic heatsink that was loose, put it back in place and I can now run at 90mw without problems.

Is there really anybody on this forum using SAWIRELESS ?????

Gave Joe a call earlier, very decent conversation.

At present there is no contention or shaping of any sort. Confirmed the R300 per month for a 512kb connection. Seemed willing to come out and test signal etc.

Did not ask too many questions, got interrupted by the receptionist in one of her panics because she broke the premicells again. Will have a good chat with him sometime and get some details, will probably go for the service, I dont mind losing R300 on a gamble.
