Scottish Referendum on Independence

Should Scotland be an independent country?

  • Yes

    Votes: 59 53.2%
  • No

    Votes: 52 46.8%

  • Total voters
    111
  • Poll closed .
No, it was never imagined that someone would allow this type of silly populist vote to go forwards. Everyone is kinda shocked. But David Cameron used it as part of his election campaign and now he has to finish what he started. If Scotland pull away Im pretty sure we can expect a labour government in the next elections.

without Scottish MPs Labour can't come to power and the party has already announced that their annual party conference will be cancelled if Scotland votes yes

Scotland voting yes will destroy Labour and will be the death to the UKIP as well

How the media shafted the people of Scotland

George Monbiot

erhaps the most arresting fact about theScottish referendum*is this: that there is no newspaper – local, regional or national, English or Scottish – that*supports independence except the*Sunday Herald. The Scots who will vote yes have*been almost without representation in the media.

There is nothing unusual about this.*Change in any direction, except further over the brink of market fundamentalism and planetary destruction, requires the defiance of almost the entire battery of salaried opinion. What distinguishes the independence campaign is that it has continued to prosper despite this assault.

I hope that Scotland votes No, Scotland and the rest of the UK are definitely "Better Together"

However there is part of me that secretly wishes that there is a yes vote so that the Yes voters get to experience the catastrophe that a Yes vote will bring.

Fortunately the most accurate Poll, the Bookies, favour a No vote

I secretly hope the same thing as well.

Actually you are wrong. Scottish MPs would have only changed the outcome of 2 or 3 elections. There is a study somewhere on this. But yeah, I personally wouldnt mind see Labour lose wbout 15% of their MPs overnight.

I dont agree it would be the death of UKIP either.

Indeed. Wonder what Scotland will do if they vote Yes and the Promised Land never materialises? :D

I'd be interested to know why you think a yes vote would bring a catastrophe? I can't see the logic at all unless of course you think Scots are stupid. Which of course they are not as they have the highest number of tertiary educated people in Europe.

If they don't split now, with the added benefit of their current oil revenues, I doubt there will be a better time later on - even in 50 years. The scots will be fools to not take the opportunity while they have it. There might be a few issues initially, but in time they can be overcome.

Self determination is a basic right all should enjoy.

Self determination for Western Cape? :D

I also cannot fathom how all the doomsayers are ranting and raving about Scotland not being able to go it alone, why would banks and companies threatening to pull out of Scotland? Will the population suddenly decrease by 50% , making business no longer a viable option there, Tosh, Scaremongering...... As stated earlier, I was always pro-union until about ten days ago, when all these threats started to surface I changed my tune...... Like Alex said, this referendum ain't about voting for the SNP, but for Independence, the voting for the parties would come later...... I for one do not like Alex, but I have no doubt in my mind that Scotland is up to the task of managing her own affairs, afterall this is not a 3rd World African country!

Yes, but my point to ghoti is that the countries worldwide that don't have a strong national identity typically tend to turn strongly toward theistic and ethnicity based identities. If you look at a map of the world, you will see these countries are generally in the third world and quite a few are effective failed states.

While rampant nationalism is inherently dangerous, nationalism does address a basic human need of belonging and identity. Remove that, and the stability of the world will be threatened.

Hmm, some examples? Scandinavia doesn't generally have strong nationalist identities. At least not of the jingoistic kind. They didn't devolve into tribal or clan based conflict.

Maybe it helps if the country in general is struggling with development, poverty, under-education etc. But then, those kinds of societies are generally at risk of any kind of dangerous ideology, be it of the right or left wing variety.

I'd also add that we'd need to distinguish between a strong national identity and nationalism.

Yep. Good words Morty, hope over fear is the campaign slogan for a reason. But yeah, today is going to be interesting that's for sure.

Huv ye goat yer carry oot in yet?

then why have Labour cancelled the annual party conference and have gone into deep crisis mode
(You'll notice that I didn't say Labour wouldn't come to power - I said that they can't -- going forward, tbo I didn't realize any elections outcome would have changed)

It would definitely be the death of UKIP because UKIP's entire identity is premised on a united kingdom against Europe

Of course the contradiction in my argument is that part of the reason moving forward Labour will depend on Scottish MPs is because of the party dynamics playing out in England constituencies which would change in the absence of Scotland -> so there could be a rebalance towards a two-party structure again.
