Screamer ADSL

So far the only improvement I have seen is by entering the dedicated DNS settings have you tried that.

I have been following this thread and the mood is getting a bit more positive - so I am going to take the plunge and take a Screamer package - at least for a month. I had one question that I didn't find on the website (tried the helpline and that seems like a futile attempt - calling me back -sure!).

If I join now do I pay a pro-rata amount for the rest of the month (probably), or will I just pay in the middle of the month from this point forward?

Anyway, when I eventually get it I'll give feedback on this thread - taking the 1MB plan on a 4MB line (anyone else here on the 1MB??).

Its mostly for business so a lot of http traffic rather than just downloads, but its my business, so I'm sure I'll have to take it for a spin on some of the good stuff!

1) Their support is terrible
2) Yes. You pay pro-rata

One thing for you to note is that screamer is horribly unstable. It is recommeded (I'm sure everybody on this forum will agree with me) for downloading lots of files. Mainly direct downloads and torrents (since the connection often seems to time out). If you're using it for a business, expect many times when it'd fail you when you need it most. That's just my humble opinion though...

is your screamer account ok when downloading direct?
my direct downloads perform at a 384 rate even though i have a 4mb line...
my browsing seems to be ok now, just the downloads that are really slow

Thanks for the feedback - good advice.

My experience is that ADSL in general is a bit wobbly for professional use, but unfortunately its all we have - Diginet is too expensive for small business use - I operate out of my own home.

The workaround is to build in as much redundancy as possible - I have 2 ADSL lines on different exchanges (512k & 4MB) plus a Vodacom 3G modem. I have ADSL accounts with Web Africa, Telkom Internet & Afrihost and an uncapped solution with Imagine IPS (http://www.imagine.co.za/business/uncapped-dynamic.html). I am trying to clean up a bit and save some money by dropping some of these!

On top of that my software that uses all this bandwidth is fairly tolerant of crappy speeds and dropped connections, so unless it is unusable for days I'll probably be able to make it work for me - I'll always have something to fall back on.

Sent in my application this morning, so I'll see how it goes and give feedback to the thread. Thanks again to all the people who have been giving their feedback - it has been really useful.

Just got an e-mail with a sorry message saying I am on a waiting list because they don't have the resources for new customers.
In a way that is good I guess, but I thought they said they were taking new subscribers again. Oh well - will wait and see how that works, as long as they are not charging me from today I am not losing out.

now that is downright sensible on the part of Screamer.
They have got their network to the point that it is stable and its users have access to the service they are paying for. Therefore only right to commission more resources before taking on new users.
They could have taken the money (and ran) but they chose not to. They have obviously been reading the DC thread (on how not to do business)

Well done Screamer

Ok... my speeds just dropped to dialup and slower.... who else?? And that after 3.5 fantastic days...

Edit: Ok ... speed up again.... wierd..

My new Screamer account R799p/m + 512ADSL R326 = R1125p/m = R43/gig and only half way thru the month!

Can only assume there is still much tinkering to be done with the network and speeds will drop from time to time...

I see that Afrihost are offering their buy one get one free special again.

I was excited in Nov when they 1st offered it - now thanks to Screamer - I dont bat an eyelid.

yeah... I agree... If my speeds maintain for the rest of the month, I will do at least another 32gigs down, giving me a total of 60gig for the month. That will work out to about R18 per gig...

same here. I should hit about 40 - 45 gigs this month assuming all the series come back and there are some new movies out. That will work out at under R10 per gig on my 384 line

Screamer dropped

Anyones Screamer connection just dropped now?
On a redial I got a '678' error.

ok back up now.
dont know what that was all about

Seems to happen now and then... I'm at 2.4 gig down for the day so far. Cued a movie or two, plus and educational software package for my laaitjie... And thats me out for the day... I go home!! yay!
