Screamer ADSL

So what does that mean? We're gonna have crap speeds and unstable connections until 2nd week of march? Screamer seems to be "upgrading" every week and we never actually get any results out of it, everytime it's the excuse as to why things go down.

I'd really just like a stable connection, in fact i don't care if i get 42 KB/s , if get a solid 30 KB/s i'll be happy. Constantly telling me "after yet another upgrade everything will be better" is not what i want to hear, because evidence shows the more Screamer upgrade the worse it gets...

That's what you get for beta testing their service and in the end they don't lose out because you pay them for the "privilege"

There is no way on God's green earth that a WIRELESS company can EVER run a successful ISP service because they're always underestimating the public's need for bandwidth/cheap pricing and appears to NEVER properly test or plan for the growth any company should, especially with a product that could do much better in this industry. They're basically taking something awesome and doing a crappy job at it just because they're money hoarding whores who lives paycheck to paycheck instead of planning a few months to a year ahead and/or listening to what their clients want

There are no restrictions on online games, at least not from Screamers side.

Howzit is around, I am sure there will be posts, I am just filling in occassionally.

I won't moan, at least we are getting updates, which is good enough for me right now.

Speeds are still good after i got home. torrents going steady...

Well as i've mentioned a few pages back, Screamer is still great if all you want to do is -download-. Unfortunately everything else is not a happy experience on my end, anything realtime (browsing, streaming, gaming) is just a constant frustration. So i'm actually on Telkom when i am in front of the PC and only switch to Screamer when i start up scheduled downloads. So i still do not see myself canceling my 3GB Telkom ISP account, despite having unlimited bandwidth.

Well, speeds are a-dropping... again. same time as last night. Roughly.

Hey guys - an update - just got an e-mail from Screamer inviting me to sign up.

I was on the waiting list for a while and then cancelled because I needed to have something in the mean time - didn't know how long the wait would be. Still watching this thread for feedback.

I won't be taking it up for now - maybe next month if there aren't too many complaints here.

Thought you guys should know - if they are taking new clients again from today (Tues 9 Feb) then it would be interesting to see if they can do it this time without toasting their existing customers!

Great, let's add more customers to an unreliable service that's already beyond its capacity. Qwert, think 3 times before joining Screamer. I'm having to use an alternative ISP every day, for at least an hour or two. I myself am very close to cancelling.

Thanks for the feedback.

And yes, signing up new customers when we still battling?! Absolutely unacceptable.
I pray another ISP comes along, mass exodus of Screamer client's. Get ready for the "Screamer refund thread"

Edit : Been wondering for a while now... IF i spend R400 on afrihost a month... i get about 14GB a month... i wonder if i get that with Screamer. According to my new bandwidth meter i should get that and more, BUT speed depending. So let's see how this month goes. And if it goes bad, Here i come Afrihost...

2 for 1 special back on. 20GB for R299 + R29 top up for 1GB + 1GB Free.

I was on DC jumped to Screamer which was better until the last week and now I'm just waiting for WebAfrica to release products, even if R100 more I'm going without question. The trial was amazing, just wasting my time with the current products. SAOL excluded, haven't tried them moving line is a luss :p

Look, I have managed 19 gig down and 2 gig up this month so far. When it runs smoothly its awesome. But for my 384 line at home, the latencies are just to bad for on-line gaming for the last week.I didn't even turn my PC on at home last night. Couldn't bare the frustration!!! I'm reconsidering the 384 uncapped option now for home. I don't really need uncapped there. The Afrihost way seems to be the way to go. They always hit a sweet "A" on pingtest.net Gaming is awesome on it!

I have been unable to send emails on screamer for some time now. Since Monday. Lost a few quotes and important business mails because of screamer's smtp server. Also the service seem very slow and somewhat erratic. I have since changed to Afrihost, a little more expensive, but VERY reliable. I had hoped screamer would be better.

Phoned this morning to speak to a techie and was told to leave my name and number and someone would phone me back. They haven't so far and its unacceptable that the telephone "support staff" cannot help.

Yea, i've easily done about 10GB this month already, with the ups and downs and all (that is 1GB a day). Even with Afrihost, i would've spent R300 already for the 10GB (assuming their R29 p/GB price, i can't bargain on limited specials everytime so not using the R14 p/GB price for my calculations). So it's still dirt cheap bandwidth i'm getting, even though i'm actually only getting 50% efficiency (if i had full uptime/speed i should be hitting 20GB , not 10GB). So at this rate i'll still most likely hit 40GB , which is what my all my future calculations are going to be based on, i don't download -that- much and 40GB would effectively be "uncapped" for me.

Basically: Any offering in the R10 p/GB range [uncapped or not] is pretty much all i need, and if this R10 p/GB pricing is not speed limited, i'll jump on it. We are getting mighty close with the R14 p/GB offerings popping up, but they don't seem to be offers on a permanent basis.

It is just unfortunate that i really struggle using screamer for more latency and stability related tasks like gaming, browsing and streaming . You simply do not notice the constant ups and downs/disconnects/slowdowns while downloading a very large file , but you sure do while browsing or trying to game and being popped out of the game with a "disconnected from server" or "server timeout" every 30 minutes. The irony is these "realtime" things are generally much LESS bandwidth intensive than downloading, so you'd think companies would make it priority to function well, since i don't use my full pipe while gaming/browsing/steaming...and if i can't game i am gonna put on a download which WILL use up the maximum capacity (which is effectively a loss to the ISP).

But fortunately i do not need uncapped for those things, my 3GB Telkom account is more than adequate, but i DO want to consolidate at some point as it's not really very economical. Also a pain to constantly switch between ISPs on the router.

Nicely put @diabolus. Agreed on that. When using steam and IW.Net for MW2, hardly ever use more than a constant 15kB/s in game (obviously not hosting). But the latency for the connection is key to smooth play and not being thrown out! In my situation I have the 512 unlimited account at my office. I can use it for downloading all I want. So the 384 unlimited option is overkill at home. I doubt I will use more than 10gig at home in a month, which is cheaper than the R399 package by R100 (using Afrihost's R29/gig). I already have a 1gig account with Afrihost (had to for gaming), with the auto top up feature enabled (had to for gaming). Maybe I should just kill the Screamer 384 account and be done with it!

One more thing, are you guys honestly getting anything going currently with your screamer accounts as is now? I gave up and have switched to Afrihost today. Pages keep timing out etc... Just painful.

*sighs* smtp.dsl.co.za is now rejecting my emails. Can someone suggest a working SMTP server for me, please?
