My first visit to MyBroadband.co.za.

I have spent a few hours reading the opinions of members who are using different ISP etc.

It gets very confusing as to what the best deal is at the moment.

I see at http://www.digichilli.com/ that they are promoting an uncapped account for R300 pm.

At http://www.afrihost.com/adsl-power-high-bandwidth.php the R29/1GB promotion

And at http://www.screamer.co.za/adsl_unlimited.php they offer an unlimited account for R399 pm.

I currently have a Telkom, 384 kbps, account and decided that it`s time to change to a cheaper ISP.

From what I have read Afrihost seems to be the most stable although not uncapped.

Screamer seems to be a no show.

Digichilli is launching on the 5th December - opposing opinions during the trial.

Should I hold off on the Digichilli package for another month to see users feedback?

We would first need to know if you require a stable connection. Also, there is comparing apples and oranges here because of the uncapped versus capped.

Gig for Gig, uncapped would be cheaper but it all depends on your (expected) usage and your quality requirements. It will also be helpful to know your usage habits to do some comparisons and savings analysis (unless you desire to use more starting from next year).

Don't forget SAOL, R499 for uncapped including 384k line rental...

Why not ask for a Digichilli trial and see how it goes for you?

Which Telkom package are you using? In some instances it may still fulfil your needs as the cheapest option. Remember with all those other providers you will still need to pay for the ADSL line (R152 for the 384k line). On the Telkom Do packages it is included. Do1 is R199 including the line rental and 1Gb of data. So that Gb is R47 which is more expensive than Afrihost but, if you use local like me, then you get 10Gigs of that thrown in. You can't match this elsewhere.

An offer you failed to mention is the SAOL uncapped offer, including line rental on a 384k line, for R499.

...if only it were so easy. maybe they're just ignoring me :/

I would be very loathe to go through the whole mission of having my ADSL line disconnected from Telkom and then reconnected by SAOL at this stage - there is just too much happening in SA with regards to ADSL. What happens if a new company comes in in January for uncapped at R250/month? then you have to cancel SAOL and wait for Telkom to reconnect your ADSL line......

Sorry - feels too much like a contract to me

I moved from Telkom to Nashua... no sweat. A few hours and I was back. I don't see the big deal. You talk about wanting to be able to move at the drop of a hat if better data prices come along yet you are willing to stay with Telkom no matter what... hmmm

Show me a better deal than Do Level 2 3GB with the 20GB local ADSL included...... With that I have 5GB on Afrihost and I have never smiled so wide :)

This is the best package I can find for the money (R390) including line rental.... Uncapped is my next step, at which stage local bandwidth will not be important to me.... but until that stage, while I atch and see how these uncapped ISP's shape up... I am convinced that I am getting value for money - well not value in worldwide ADSL terms... but in SA terms :)

Thank You for the feedback.

@RavenServers
I run a member site for PLR and MRR products on Dreamhost servers which requires me to download and upload about 6 to 8GB per month.

I also host the Delavo system for members which includes support, private forum, helpdesk and access to the management system of Delavo - also hosted on Dreamhost.

SO total data transfer is about 10 to 12GB per month.

@rorz0r
Yes, I didn`t mention SAOL for R499 pm because I don`t want to move my Telkom line at the moment.

The Digichilli trial thread seems to show that members asking for a trial aren`t getting replies currently - trial might be over - or I am looking in the wrong place?

@LancelotSA
I use minimal local bandwidth - once a week or so I might have a look at TV schedules.

@flashsa
As mentioned I don`t use any local bandwith.

So then I would keep my line rental with Telkom and buy 10GB + 3GB from Afrihost per month giving you a total monthly cost of R530ish (give or take a rand - can't remember the exact 384 line rental figure) and a spare GB over your maximum monthly data usage...

Correct - Trial is over - They are Launching SOON! (6th?) :) :)

We've waited so long for this moment :eek:

I used to love the chilli, but based on my experience it's currenlty the worst of the 3:

Ranking:

1. Afrihost
2. Screamer
3. Chilli

I am really glad I never cancelled my Afrihost service in favour of screamer or chilli... for now I am quite happy to sit back and watch for BIG service imrpovements from the 2 new uncapped companies....

Why pay that when you can get uncapped & unshaped for less from saol or cybersmart and it actually works unlike screamer & digichilli?

Afihost is very reliable, and we may be surprised with the buy 1 get 1 free offer again :)

Because I refuse to have another company in charge of my ADSL line rental portion - it is too restrictive for me. As it currently stands I can change ISP's overnight - but with those other okes you need to wait for them to change your line back to Telkom. No thanks........ it's far too similiar to signing a 12/24 month contract for my liking

Can anyone explain 'owning' the Telkom line approach?
Isn't that just a retention and bandwidth shaping strategy?
What're the other benefits?

It's a mystery to me... I think the ISPs 'buy' lines from Telkom and then 'sell' them to their customers but, because they buy so many lines, they (maybe) get a bulk discount and can offer the lines to their customers cheaper than Telkom (while probably making a profit off it as well).

I know SAOL only allow their accounts to be used from the line with which it is bundled:eek: so this leads me to believe these ISPs have some control over the line unless they have to ask Telkom to bind the accounts to the lines.

As you will see on this forum, many people are against having a line with an ISP. It's viewed as a long-term, restrictive solution.

This is all guesswork (except the perception of lines with ISPs).

EDIT: I believe Neethi is the SAOL rep on this forum. I'm sure he could tell you more
