SEACOM’s effect will take time

I know that a lot of the "uncapped" don't make a lot of margin. The ISP's use them to draw customers. They won't really worry that people that previously used uncapped will now opt for a 40 gig cap.

Also uncapped on a 4 meg line is completely different to uncapped on a 384 line, they will always be able to grade their products according to speed as well.

The changes will happen like this: First the caps will increase but you will pay the same as what you did before, then the line speed will increase but they will let you have a lot more speed for a little bit more money (That way the consumers will end up spending more)

I think that by this time next year we will all have much faster higher capacity lines AND be spending more on internet than now. You will still be able to get a 384, 1 gig line and it will be much cheaper but we will all opt for the 4meg 30gig accounts that will cost a little more than what we are spending now.
 
I haven't read this all so what I have to say might have been said already.

We will have a huge increase in international bw, so if you work for any of the companies involved with seacom as a admin u will b getting great speeds. For the rest of us the most we can hope for currently is a lower lat. I personally don't think we will see significant price drops in the first month but who knows maybe they surprise us.

We still have the issue with local bandwidth though which mostly routes through the Telkom network so until they drop their rates or we can move over to another provider for local bw its not going to get cheaper.

Unfortunately all companies want to make money. They not there to provide the best service with no profit, everyone wants to make as much money doing as little as possible. Its all about the money not about lets make life better for the home / office user.

I hope this makes sense I don't feel like reading through it again.
 
Surely an increase in caps equates to a price decrease [R/mb].
If these "experts" are to be believed there will be zero benefit from SEACOM until after the usual suspect decide they've made enough money. Meaning caps stay as they are & everyone carries like SEACOM never happened.
 
Let's wait and see what happens. This is all fortune telling until they have turned on the cable...No use getting worked up now.

And if nothing does happen, then we can petition our new Communications Minister .... Somebody just needs to explain to him what the internet is first :D along with some other basics like how to open outlook and read email, maybe what 'kbs' is or even what fibre optic cable is :confused: :D :eek: ... then surely we'll sort it out !!!
 
The IS CEO pointed out that SEACOM is a ‘standalone’ cable system which does not provide any redundancy. This means that current SAT3/SAFE clients will initially only use SEACOM for cheaper additional capacity.

The SAT3/SAFE does not other redundancy either as it is just one cable. I don't see his point. Why would companies continue to buy from SAT3/SAFE if they can exactly the same deal for 10% of the price?
 
I was expecting something like this - just so gatvol of hearing for months and months that cheap bandwidth is coming - then, just before it's supposed to hit, the backpeddling starts!

hmmm, maybe they get kickbacks from telkom.... but probably all have binding contracts that they have to adhere to untill they lapse. Forcing them to continue for now with SAT3/SAFE.
Thats my guess ;)
 
hmmm...hahaha...local loop unbundling is what we all should be crying, or rather..local loop what what? cause Telkom is schnitsing keniving bitches that aint going to happen anytime soon, and until that doesnt happen all the exising dsl customers will continue getting screwed over...fck telkom,fck ivy..may the worms enjoy her brains and lets hope that the new minister get it right by using zumas "socialist dream" on the network (only place I want to see it...

what are the costs to start another SAIX/IS after SEACOM arrives?? .. it seems that this is what people should hope for ... it doesn't seem likely that they will be willing to drop existing prices. And it is unrealistic to expect prices to drop on day 1 anyway :)

The only other alternative to SAIX/IS types is NEOTEL i think (i stand corrected though) ... so what are their views on the SEACOM cable impact??

sheesh, you guys are a bunch of b!tchers and whiners. Some solitary dude makes a comment in a news article and you all toss your toys out of the cot. The least we can do is wait and see. At that stage you can then say, "I told you so"... but saying "I told you so" before Seacom has even gone live just makes you look like a tool.
