Seacom launch delayed

Was this not similar to this years april fools joke article? I know its not a joke btw.

Sitting in the traffic yesterday while it was pouring in Cape Town on my way to the rugby, I was thinking about how crap it must have been 100 years ago when "cars" got stuck in the mud and had no real protection against weather effects.

Then I thought about how in about 30 years from now, we are gonna think back to how crap it was sitting in cars waiting for traffic to move as we then fly around in our Mercedes Air Express anti-gravity cars at 300Kmph...

Now, currently we are moaning about our speeds and useless internet, where about 7 years ago we were all on dial-up.

Just imagine how hard we are going to laugh in a years time when we are all on uncapped connections at this period we are in right now, moaning and bitching about small delays such as this.

Guess what I am trying to say is - lighten up guys, the light at the end of the tunnel is at least now visible, and it will only grow brighter with time.

PS - That light is not a train :)

Light at the end of a South African tunnel?

We get ripped off by cell operators, car companies, food companies just about everything in this country is geared towards raping us. What makes you guys so sure seacom will be any different?

The last article I read said the cable was here and being tested. Why are they now saying it can't go live because of pirates? and why only 3 days before the last launch date I read about on MyBB are they coming out saying they need another month?

Surely if the cable is here we can go live? What more do they need to do thats going to take them a month to do?

The testing of the cable takes part in sections - for one thing ... and its probably quite a complicated affair ... we're not talking about checking a 5 meter CAT-5 cable here.

All the moaners here are just latching onto the negative parts without reading the whole thing properly.

Even when the cable goes live, its not like we're going to be seeing changes immediately - so whether there were delays or not ... a little patience is still in order.

The cable section from South Africa (Mtunzini) to Kenya (Mombasa), including all south and east African landing stations, has already undergone successful testing.
that sounds sHexy :D

I dunno, how bout South Africa having nukes and then dismantling them all (first country in the world to do so) and this obscure thing called apartheid that no longer exists here..

Perhaps..perhaps things change?

Glass half empty there I suspect?

/hands killa some vaseline

don't worry, things are going to change, soon..... but hold onto the vaseline just in case.

we have been waiting a long time for this so a month (or even a few) isn't that much to wait if you compare it....

viva Seacom, viva !

When you moving :D:p

I don't mind the wait i just find it interesting people think pricing will drop over night and drop dramatically.

Why would i move? I love this country, sure things are expensive and we get raped but my point is everyone is expecting massive price drops which i cannot see happening. I know reality is sometimes hard for people to handle.

While the deployment in this area has been completed, Seacom still have to splice the cable section deployed from Mumbai, India, to Africa.

Testing of the larger cable system will be finalised shortly thereafter.

The cable section from South Africa to Kenya, including all southern and east African landing stations, has already undergone successful testing.

That's the delay. They are still busy splicing the cable in that area.

Yeah, same thing was said when Telkom was about to anounce news on broadband and lo and behold nothing (no reduced ADSL or increase caps or increase in speed).

Well they did increase the caps from 1 --> 2gb and 3 --> 5 gb so that was not too bad and par for the course. That is a realistic view of what happened, people here are thinking caps will go up 50gb for the same money :p

This is my favourite bit....

The new available bandwidth is set to remove SA's international bandwidth duopoly controlled by Telkom and Neotel. It will increase competition, improve the quality of broadband and drive market prices lower

:D
