Semi-shaped from Axxess

I do notice more instability on the IS fibre semi-shaped than SAIX shaped. Thats why I always have an SAIX prepaid account as a backup.

I play a lot of games on Xbox live and used to use a 'regular' account. I had lots of lags and could never find the servers when searching. Since I have been using the Axxess semi-shaped account...my ping response on Xbox Live has improved drastically. I have no (or very little) lag and am able to play on international servers without getting my butt kicked.

If you're a gamer, the semi-shaped account from access is a great, cheap solution.

Thanks HoodRich, i think i will move to the semi-shaped account.

For other guys who might be thinking of going onto the semi-shaped option from axxess. I have used it for a few days now, and i definitely see an improvement in the youtube video performance. I haven't really used it on much else, but so far so good.

Thanks

For those who have used the semi shaped Axxess through IS... How is the netwrok? Is there any big difference in it and the Telkom SAIX? I am also planning on changing.. but am worried if the network is totally reliable or not..

normal accounts are unshaped after office hours to:confused:

No, that is not correct. There are currently 3 basic types of FIBRE based ADSL accounts:

1) SAIX SHAPED - This is shaped the WHOLE day
2) SAIX UNSHAPED - This in UNshaped the WHOLE day
3) IS SEMI-SHAPED - This is SHAPED from 7AM-5PM, and then is unshaped from 5PM until 7AM the next morning

Hope this clears things up.

Regarding the OPs question- I'm not sure if it would help youtube videos because youtube is port 80 which gets priority on port 80 anyway, even on shaped accounts.

My suggestion is to get 1GB of prepaid semi-unshaped from axxess, and see if you notice a difference first...

By the way, also have a look at http://www.hellkom.co.za/isp-prices/3gb-adsl/
There are many ISPs offering semi-shaped for cheaper than AXXESS. I recommend one of the big names like imaginet, nexus or openweb etc.

Hope this helps...

It is TOTALLY stable - seems to be better that the SAIX account - remember, it is Fibre...:D

quick Q just to past the time....
Ive noticed on my 4mb telkom account that on a download i wont get more than 384k single threaded to international servers... first off is this just my imagination? and 2nd would unshaped/semi-shaped do anything to help me get full 4mbit single thread?

In my experience, SAIX accounts are limited to +- 50kB/sec for youtube and vids and most streaming media. It is infuriating when trying to watch youtube, dailyshow etc and it refuses to buffer faster than 50kb/sec on my 4meg line.

I switched to the IS Semi-shaped and now all videos after 7pm cache very quickly (usually 100KB/sec +) and never pause or buffer. A huge improvement and well worth the money.

I'm not sure whether you will notice much difference on a 384 line because that's limited to 42KB/sec anyway.
