I spotted this dark spot last night and of course now that I've seen it I just keep looking for it (ignorance was bliss). I think it's sensor dust

// I get my sensor cleaned every 6 months, not sure where you based but i have a chap in Cape Town who does excellent work at a good price. I am to scared to go near the dam thing

I use sensor swabs with Eclipse cleaning fluid on my 350d - works like a charm. Haven't had to clean the 40d yet, after more than 5000 pics, so the sensor shaker must work :)

You should get yourself a cellphone with a decent camera... then you wouldn't have these issues! ;)
Trust me, as soon as they make one with a decent camera I probably will. :)

AFAIK you can take the camera to a canon center and they will clean the sensor for you.

But you have to pay (R250 I seem to recall). I think Nikon does it for free.

Don't think there's a Canon centre in Bwana's neck of the woods.

*squint*

*saves image*

*blows up*

Er... it's a light in the background... There's a whole row of them back there. If you blow it up large enough you can even see the pole.

^.^

Edit... Scratch that... *slaps head* I see now.... *walks away quietly*

I had the same problem a couple years back on a 10D and we took it to a Canon centre and they sorted it out, i think it was for free at the time.

Do you mean the smudge? I can't figure out if it's something on the sensor or just part of the cloud patterns. The dot is definitely a light - you can see the lamp post under it. Post a 100% crop maybe?

Does the 400D have the sensor shaker? Seems to work pretty well on the 40D.

I'm talking about the grey blur inside centre of the white ring. I've just updated the dust data so we'll see if that helps. It seems to be holding on despite the sensor shaker.

Take a photo of a (clean) white wall with good lighting.

Not much point in looking for smudges in pic that is full of clouds & dust anyway.

Since I know what I'm looking for I can see it on most of the images from that camera - its definitely something to do with the sensor. :o
