ShowMax gets Android TV support

Excellent. I'll be sure to test this tonight on my Shield and compare to the LG TV app.

Oh yes. MUCH more usable than the LG WebOS app, and easier than casting it. Thumbs up for ShowMax here. Finally catching up to Netflix.

Latest Update Breaks Working Android TV Boxes

Warning - Don't update to the latest app if you have a rooted android TV box, in my case the MXQ.

Joyce: Thanks for contacting ShowMax. How can I assist you?
Mick: MXQ android TV box stopped working with latest update " your device appears to be rooted, playback disabled"
Joyce: Is the device rooted?
Mick: Dunno, been working for over a year
Mick: ??
Joyce: Unfortunately the device is rooted and it will no longer work unless you un-root the device. This is studio requirements to disable all rooted devices.
Mick: Strange, Netflix app still works. Seems you just scored 2 months subscription from me with service!!!
Mick: Sorry, meant NOT providing a service
Joyce: Sorry that you feel that way however we will no longer support any rooted devices. ShowMax and Netflix is not built on the same platform.
Mick: Just how I am supposed to know if I have a rooted device when it's been working for over a year???
Joyce: The device was working however we never formally supported it it was working because it was rooted. As per our website this is the device we support https://www.showmax.com/eng/help/introduction/3
Joyce: For security reasons we do not support rooted devices so the app upgrade has disabled all rooted devices.
Mick: ... and upset who knows how many existing clients while scoring subscription fees for no service. I suspect there's a case to be answered here under CPA legislation.
Joyce: Unfortunately we cannot answer that as we have never formally advertised anywhere that the device is supported. We do not support the device it was working illegally.
Mick: Just just checked your supported devices and it seems that android is not supported at all, nor is there a list of supported devices by Brand & model no - seems I'm on a hiding to nothing here and out of pocket!!
Joyce: Android is broad and there is no way we could possibly list them by model numbers.
Joyce: We do mention that its android phones and tablets.
Mick: Don't envy you your job - goodbye
Joyce: Thanks for contacting ShowMax, have a great day.

Could be that MXQ's are rooted from the factory? Some devices are.
Also, are there no Xposed modules that can mask the root status of your device(s)?

Edit: like so?

if your android is rooted, jsut look up how to hide root.

there was a massive issue with this when pokemon go did something similar. because I never rooted my G4 I did not look into it much but there are workarounds.

I know it looks like a weird thing to do, but go look at r/pokemongodev for tips to hide root. I highly doubt Showmax would be using google safetynet to check for root.

first link in google gave me this

Install Xposed Installer app on your rooted device: Download.
Also install RootCloak Xposed module: Download.
Open Xposed Installer and tap on Framework> Install/Update.
Go back and tap Modules and check RootCloak.
Reboot your device.
Then open RootCloak and start using it.

hope this helps those of you who have rooted devices and want to use showmax, at least until your subscription ends....

after that, I recommend Canceling, siting that not allowing rooted devices as the reason (point out you do not need a rooted device to record the channels so the argument is not valid)
and move to Kodi.

Just contact SHOWmax and they only support the following android tv boxes currently: Nexus Player (GMS) NVIDIA Shield (GMS) MyGica ATV 585, ATV 582 (GMS).

Everybody at MC has samdung and apple devices. they don't know what that windows thing is...

MC hasn't got anything to do with Showmax, soooo it doesn't matter what device they use.

Console support would've been nice, like PS or Xbox, doubt it would go to the previous generations though :( as I've got a PS3 in the room

This is good of them, they are trying their best i must say. One day i might give Showmax a try

So does Showmax Android TV support just mean they give you a little Tickbox? Cause it doesn't seem to work on a few Android TV boxes due to it thinking it's rooted.
