Skyworth Binge TV Android media box - Tips/Tricks/Apps thread

There appears to be a known issue with YouTube that is blocking 4k on slower connections (or connections it thinks are slower for some reason). It is affecting more than just our box. Downgrading the YouTube app (removing updates) may resolve this, but we are still investigating and will raise a query with Google on this issue.

You don't need Chrome, you can use Puffin TV to browse the web - download from playstore.

Terrarium tv can be downloaded from https://terrarium-tv.en.uptodown.com/android - you can type "terrarium tv" in puffin tv and select the first link and download from there.

once you start downloading Terrarium TV, go to start page of puffin tv and scroll down to downloads(Apk will be there) - select the apk to install, a pop-up will appear to allow puffin tv to install the apk - select puffin tv.

Thanks Sumen,
I did this last night and it works like a charm. I must say I am quite impressed with this box. I prefer it over Telkom's LIT

If I side loaded Netflix do I need to open it from ES File explorer every time?
No, download TV Repo or sideload launcher, both are different so try them out and see which you prefer.

TV Repo creates a shortcut of the app while sideload launcher is an app that shows all your apps.

I’ve had the box less than a week. Not too happy with the following issues which I’d love a response to:

1. Whenever I start using the box the sound over HDMI doesn’t work until I go into the Settings > Sound. Is this the HDMI passthrough issue raised by others? Note I’m using an amp.

2. Existing hard drive doesn’t work (I either get a ‘corrupted’ or ‘unsupported’ message. When will the NTFS fix be ready? USB Flash drive also wouldn’t work and despite selecting the option to format, it still doesn’t recognise the device. So I can’t use a hard drive for Kodi app...

3. Last night the box couldn’t pick up Ethernet connection and only started recognising the connection again after a hard reset (removing power and plugging in again). This morning it was just stuck and I had to do another hard reset.

Overall not too impressed, mostly due to issues 1 & 2. Considering returning...

Skyworth Digital Support has noted that they are looking into the passthrough issue.

I've also had some weird ethernet issues when putting the box to sleep and bringing it on again, sometimes won't pick up the connection.

I'm also seeing issues with Youtube where the audio and video just go completely out of sync, not sure what causes this but only restarting the box fixes it.

These issues do kind of make the box unusable for my setup too as I need proper passthrough support and other than that I only watch Youtube which doesn't do 4K and has the major issue described above. We'll see if they can resolve these issues.

Just to update you guys, we are looking into the ethernet issues. We confirm the Youtube issues are related to the Youtube apk and not our box. We suggest you try removing the updates from the Youtube app. This seems to affect our competitors as well, and is raised with Google from our side.

Passthrough and NTFS support will be resolved by the next update. This is scheduled for early August.

Hi All,

I can confirm the ethernet issues should be resolved with the new update.

Thank you for your patience,
Skyworth Support

Thanks! I tried removing the updates and it does indeed play back 4K videos now, though Youtube playback breaks for me when waking up the device from sleep, restarting the box again fixes it. Also I noticed with the bundle Youtube app (without any updates) when you're in a video and back out (by pressing back once) it tries to display a kind of picture in picture mode with the video still playing in the background but it fails miserably are I'm just left with a garbled mess:

Pressing back again stops the video and things return to normal.

Excellent.

Was going to pull the trigger too.
Just too many issues listed here.

Well you can't now anyway as they're out of stock :D

I'm happy to see they have people actively working on updates though (and a company rep!), I didn't expect that for a R900 box.

I’ve now noticed the same sound synch issue you’re referring to. Was working fine until last night - whenever the video starts the sound continues but the video gets stuck for a couple of seconds then when the video continues it’s way out of synch. This isn’t just happening on YouTube. It’s on dstv now as well!!

Skyworth Support - please respond to my 3 queries above as well as this sound synch issue:
1. Is the sound issue I’m experiencing where I have to keep going into Sound Settings the ‘pass through’ issue?
2. Hard drive issues (not as urgent anymore as I’m sharing a samba connection no problem)
3. Ethernet - you responded. When do you anticipate the next release to be?
4. Sound synch issue - most urgent.

Thanks.

Excellent.

Unfortunately there isn't much we can do about the YouTube App; we are dependent on Google to resolve this. There may be a newer version that works without issues, but we will keep you updated with feedback from Google.

The sound issue is the passthrough issue. This should depend on how your TV or amplifier processes the sound. You are likely to be defaulting to downmixing mode. Passthrough will give you full Dolby sound.

The hard disk issues seem to be caused by Android 8's permission structure and NTFS. We expect the next update to resolve all of these, although we cannot reproduce non working FAT32 disks in our engineering environment.

We will try to reproduce the sound sync issue. We have not encountered it to date, but it is noted.

The next release should be early August.

So I have a new issue after my USB doesn't read any format drives. Now my remote won't work, and yes I checked the batteries. Just stopped working while watching YouTube. I used a mouse to unpair it and now it's can't connect to the remote at all.

To many bugs, I feel like this is a alpha build. I am returning it to Takealot and getting the Mi box. It's sad cos it's brilliant when it works.
