Currently, I have an EcoFlow River Pro connected to an EcoFlow Delta Max via an XT60i (DC PSU), which is then connected to a Mecer 2000VA UPS. I use Home Assistant to switch on the AC output when the Delta Max reaches 80% battery, so I can top it up using its 720Wh capacity.
The Mecer UPS handles the roughly 30ms switch time (from bypass to battery) that both EcoFlows require, ensuring I don't lose power on my main rig and other devices during that interval.
My Question: In this setup, where the Mecer UPS is almost never drained (i.e., rarely leaves bypass mode), how often should I manually charge my SLA batteries? I’ve connected XT60-M and XT60-F connectors between the battery and the UPS and made a cutout on the side. This allows me to disconnect the battery from the UPS and plug in my Victron Blue Smart IP65 24V DC charger (also modified to use XT60).
I bring this up because I’ve noticed the UPS’s ability to maintain the load during the 30ms switchover (which the EcoFlow needs) will degrade significantly over time. The load is 200–300W. Right now, the UPS can handle 700W for 30ms, but in about three months, it may struggle to handle even 200–300W for that same duration and wind up causing all the devices to lose power.
I understand SLA batteries degrade, but it’s surprising to see such rapid degradation. That’s why I bought the Victron charger.
So my main questions are:
1. What should my maintenance cycle be for manually charging the SLA batteries?
2. Should I drain them before charging, given that the UPS’s builtin charger does function (but perhaps not optimally)?
