Do you have any equipment already? Are you going to use POE or normal power and ethernet?

Related note: for a POE install, is it necessary to use outdoor rated cable (CAT5e/6) if they are all going to be under the roof? And is CCA ok or rather full copper?

Normal cable is fine, but DO NOT use CCA cable for PoE installations. Rather pay more for full copper when running PoE

At this stage the only thing I have is 1 EZViz H3W wifi cam. this camera's ridiculous motion sensing is an issue and what forced me to look into other cams, I ended up on this thread.

Sadly I am in no way experienced or knowledgeable with regards to IP Cameras or the acronyms there of. let alone whats needed.

Ive read through this entire thread about twice and as stupid as it may sound, Im still not up to speed to what I need.
I know I need the cameras, some kind of network switch (poe?) and a PC too. Of these i dont have anything yet. But was waiting on a special with the reolinks to buy some as I seen everyone here having good luck with them.

Where I am now is that I know my EZViz cam sucks as it cannot be routed to blue iris.
So I need reolink cams (And whatever else I need), a PC, NVR and Blue iris. Once thats in place I need to figure out how it all goes together.

The motivation behind this was that I initially bought that EZViz cam instead of a Full blown motion sensing alarm system that would have been 15+K.
But soon realized that this cam does not and cant do proper motion detection.

and literally all I need is a camera that can push notification when someone walks in front of the camera...

I'm on this journey as well.

Got 6 x reolinks, couldn't afford an NVR from them so I went and got an old desktop PC. On his PC I am going to install BlueIris and use that to manage the cameras. There is also a Reolink app that you can install on the pc. I also got a Poe switch to power the cameras. So layout will be

Desktop PC (NVR) < Router > POE switch > Camera

This is all still theory though, should be able to test it out next week when cameras arrive

So you can buy a DVR/NVR (e.g. one from Reolink). That looks like a dvd player, the cameras connect to it and it records all the footage depending on how you set it up. If you have POE cameras, get a POE NVR and it will supply power to the cameras over the network cable as well.

OR, use a PC with Blue Iris (or any other NVR software) to do the same function as a dedicated NVR. I am going to get a surveillance HDD for my PC to record on. You can view this footage from any device on your network or even outside if you set it up that way. Advantage is you can use an AI tool like @alqassam mentioned, which scans still images from the feed when motion is detected. It figures out if it is a tree/person/car/whatever and you can get alerts based on that. There is also a face recognition module, not sure how well it works.

This is still theory for me as well though, my cameras should be delivered next week then I will see how it goes.

If you buy the RLC-410's, POE is definitely the way to go to simplify cabling and routing. You can buy a 4 port Tenda POE switch from Scoop for around R500. This has a power supply and connects to your home network. The POE ports take a LAN cable to each camera that supplies power and data. You can then detect each camera from anywhere in your network, either on your pc on NVR.

Yass gents, thanks for all the responses!! from where I stand now after reading the responses and watching a few videos its really nothing too complicated at all.

- POE switch (Im looking at the Tenda 6 port on Takealot, Seems cheap and legit?)
- Cables (Not sure yet, but saw that scoop sells the supplies.

Please let me know if anyone has some specials on these or any recommendations.

  1. For a Dekstop PC i bought an old used Dell on Carbonite for R1.5k. It needs more RAM and a CPU upgrade so all in i probably would have spent 3-4k - which isn't bad.
  2. POE switch i bought this one>> R725 + R50 for delivery

For those running their IP Cameras thru their PC do you have a dedicated NAS HHD you installed in the PC? or you running/saving all the feeds off a normal HDD?
