I recently sent an SMS to a friend of mine who has a 084 number on VodaCom's network (He ported his number from Cell C more than a year ago).
A few minutes afterward I get a call with the person asking me why I am sending them these messages... from another strange 076 number.

I call VodaCom asking them why they are routing my SMS's to strange people, they check up on the records for me and verify that it was indeed sent to the 084 VodaCom number, but they inform me that they can't help me any further with this matter. They can't put in a service request or anything

I can't believe how South African companies treat their customers, and that the cellular operators' networks are so flawed.
I suspect number portability is to blame, guess they don't really care for people who are clever enough to port. These strange number portability errors still exist after such a long time

Please send me a detailed PM with all the details. Include information such as who sent a SMS when to what number, who received it, etc. Please include dates and times if you can.

I'll have it traced to see if we can see what happened.

Guess I was just the unlucky 1-in-a-million guy in this case

We're still trying to figure out what actually happened. For example according to your records the person that accidentally got your SMS (and whom you don't know) actually phoned you BEFORE he got the SMS.

So, we're a bit perplexed. I've asked for more records from other systems. Should have them soon.

Vodacom3g >> Since you work for VOdacom, Can you get a response from Vodacom as to why their deals on new and upgrade contracts are sooooo crap as compared to MTN.

I am with Vodacom for a long long time and I feel because of the pathetic offers I have nooo choice but to port over.

Vodacom has the nokia 5800 on talk 500 contract.
I can get it free on mtn for R149 a month.

Please!!!!

i think the entire forum (especially vodacom subscribers like myself) is currently holding its breath lol

V3G we would appreciate it if you could shed some light on the rather large gap in prices.. i seem to remember not so long ago the two major networks were very evenly matched in terms of prices and rates but all of a sudden things just changed and MTN seemed to bring out the heavy guns.. i hear of more people porting to MTN now than ever befor..

this is not to dis any particular network, i think we would just like to know whats been going on...

i tried calling my gf like about 5 times last week and i ended up going through to someone else (my gf has a vodacom contract) her line was diverted to someone else.
vodacom apologised and sorted it out but i still can't believe something like that actually happened...

Hi

I had similar problem sending sms from MTN a few years back. Might have been a problem on the Vodacom side??

I send a lot of messages for our local church and I got complaints and people asking me to remove them from our database when their numbers did not exist on our side. Messages is sent via a computer & cellphone (not webbased bulk sms service!)

As networks could not help me, I simply replied sorry. I do not know if the problem went away or if the people gave up complaining to me (think it went away . . .)

Might also be bug in the central database used by networks to determine who owns what number? If I send a sms my provider has to lookup the recipient to see which network the sms must go to etc.

Could be a bugger when sms'ing your wife . . .

The SMS was actually of an extremely private nature, and it just had to be that SMS that was sent to a stranger.
You could imagine the person's response.
Just my luck

so then you sms your wife clean things... and the naughties is in the bedroom lol :)

Not solved :(

Just be careful the next time you sent someone a naughty...it might end up on your boss's cellphone

My wife also received a sms from an unknown 083 number. This is the first time this has happened. One gets the odd wrong number phone call, but not sms. She is on MTN.
