SMTP server missing?
Been trying to send mail since 8 this morning, but VC's smtp server appears to be missing! Ping to 196.11.146.148 times out as well. Anyone else picking this up?

Can't send email for approx. 24 hours
I'm unable for approx. 24 hours to send email on my phone.
When I phone 155 the message says Vodacom is experiencing email problems and that engineers are working on it.
I suspect Vodacom isn't giving this fault the correct priority.
I want to put on record that for the email fault to persist for around 24 hours is unacceptable.
If Vodacom can't provide a 99.9% service then best not offer it.

We've been seeing a strange situation lately (last 3 /4 weeks) with some of the larger 'free mail providers' not accepting mail from our relays for between a few hours to days at a time. Not a blacklisting issue. They've not been able to explain to us why this is happening yet. We suspect they're overloaded and is managing capacity this way.
The result is that mail sent gets cached on the Vodacom servers, firstly resulting in a delay in delivering, but also loading the servers more and more, eventually affecting all mail.
The frustrating this is that the Yahoo's of the world are just ignoring our requests to sort this.

My dad just contacted me from Bloemfontein. Cannot send mails via his phone. He uses smtp.vodacom.co.za. Error message states he cannot connect to server. Going to advise hime to switch to smtp.vodamail.co.za. Hope it works. Any other advice?

Why am I not having issues with other smtp I use for desktop email. Is this not passing the buck and thus not attending to the issue.

smtp.vodacom.co.za and smtp.vodamail.co.za both point to the same ip: 196.11.146.148.
This is time to follow IC's perpetual suggestion and get yourself a Gmail account! You can use their smtp server to send your mail as well!

No, not at all, was just a FYI.
Posting this kind of info is no attempt to not fix the problem. Rather I post this type of info to give a heads-up on the complexities of these kind of environments. Most forumites are in related industries and enjoy discussing these kind of issues.
I could make like some of the other operators and never give any info out, outside of 'We are attending to the problem' type of responses, but that's not what the forum is about.

If he can use his own providers' smtp server (maybe with authentication), it could help.

On Vodacom's email service do you strictly have to use the Vodacom smtp or can you use say smtp.saix.net?
The saix server will not allow you to send mail using it if you are not directly connected to the saix network. This is done to stop spammers from using their servers. As I see it once you are a subscriber of theirs they can at least act against you if you are originating spam. You can however get a Gmail account and use their smtp server from any network since you have to log on to the gmail server. This can also be very useful if you use sims from different networks on the same pc - you don't have to change your smtp server or select a different sending account.....

Lo and behold! That did work! Use vodamail username and password on asmtp.saix.net. Worthwhile remembering as well. Thanks v3g

Glad it's still up.
When we first started with the data network, I had this vision (rather naively!) that we could convince all the major ISP's to run an authenticated smtp server, resolving the irritation of having to change mail client settings when you switch bearer.
Out of all the ISP's I spoke with, only SAIX actually did it and built this server. So, for once, kudos to them.
