smtp.vodacom.co.za

I am also trying to send via smtp.vodacom.co.za this afternoon, but my mail client can't connect ... I am using the internetvpn AP (but not connected to a VPN currently). nslookup returns 196.11.146.148 as the smtp server's IP

EDIT: my IS ADSL line reports the same IP address

EDIT 2: Switched to internet AP and it went through fine

v3g, is the environment set up like this (as the internetvpn IPs are public)?

The best advice I can give you is get Gmail;)

Hi. I have two clients in Jhb that cannot send mail using the smtp.vodacom.co.za nor smto.vodamail.co.za server address. The problem started a week ago, but at the time we were more concerned with another problem (see "3G-to-3G RDP Problem" post - same clients). I have logged in remotely to both servers and tried to ping the latter addresses, but get the same "Request has timed out" message on both ends.

Both these machines are using 3G connections with the unrestricted APN. I am also using a 3G internet connection with the unrestricted APN but am not experiencing the same problem. I managed to find a work-around for one of the two clients, where using the same address as that for receiving mail accompanied with authentication pulled through. This did not work with the second client.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. I scanned through posts and there was some brief talk of an smtp server setup by saix: asmtp.saix.net - could I use this and where do I get hold of auth details?

All the apn's should see the smtp server. Can you test with the internetvpn apn again, when you get a chance?

Sure, will test a bit later on ... the internetvpn apn was very shaky yesterday ... struggled to connect the whole day

I have a couple of gmail accounts, but when you deal with a bunch of idiots like the iBurst accounts department, your gmail will soon be flooded with their crap e-mails

I can't simply change the APN to internetvpn because that client is far away (100km) and has a site even further away (1200 km) that relies on the unrestricted APN being used on the server in order to login remotely and run multiple instances of pastel on the server (for multiple peps) using terminal services. Plus it doesn't make sense that it is APN related, because I am also using the unrestricted APN and am able to see/use the smtp server.

I think v3g was asking me to try again with the internetvpn apn

earth to vodacom3g, any idea why two of my clients cannot connect to your smtp server? It is the same two clients that we struggled to get the RDP-to-RDP setup working again. They are both in Roodepoort area, so perhaps it has something to do with the tower in that area. You have all the details for these machines, I PMed them to you before

Sorry, my orbit only comes over Pta between 2 and 3pm, so only saw you post now......

Just to confirm, both these guys can't access smtp.vodacom.co.za from the unrestricted apn, in Roodepoort, but from Pta it works?

Will report so long.

Here are my results: if I change the APN to internet from unrestricted, then the servers do see the smtp.vodacom.co.za mail server, else not.

This problem is obviously region specific. I have managed to get a work-around that is good enough to be left permanently for one of the clients, and a very dodge, make-shift solution for the other which requires calling the cape town branch, getting everyone to log off their remote sessions, then changing the APN on the router to internet, getting everyone in the Jhb office to send their emails quickly at the same time, then change the APN back to unrestricted and reboot the router, then call the Cape town branch to let them know they can resume working.

As you can imagine, the last solution won't be acceptable for more than a few days.

Perhaps that saix smtp server could work, if only someone could let me in on how to authenticate myself on it?

I think V3g did mention some time ago that the saix server requires the same authentication details as the Vodacom server.

I don't use any authentication details to send mail through the vodacom server (smtp.vodacom.co.za). My mail is hosted with sagateway under domain gavgapi.co.za so I retrieve my mail from a different pop3 mail server (mail.gavgapi.co.za) which uses authentication details not relevant to vodacom.

Where do I get these auth details aye i ask?

V3g, your help required here.

Ran a batch of tests around the country. From what I can see the problem is only on the internetvpn and unrestricted around the Midrand area.

Landyman, from where did you test? Once connected do an ipconfig and post your IP. I should be able to see if you're connected to Midrand or Pta.

It will only work if you have a smtp login on a server that routes via SAIX and they have accomodated it in their server.

Would that include SAIX ADSL reseller ISPs? Easiest way to get a login then if you didn't already have one would be to buy a GB of prepaid ADSL bandwidth @ R70 once off.

I want to join the "UNABLE TO SENT EMAIL CLUB"!

Help also needed in Nelspruit! :D

I am in Bryanston (probably the worst reception in the country btw :) )
Do you want my IP or the dns lookup ip for the smtp server?
Oh, I can't provide anything now, as I am unable to connect ... something seriously wrong with the vpn apn

EDIT: Got connected after 13 tries!!
smtp ip: 196.11.146.148
my ip: 196.46.170.221
