smtp.vodacom.co.za

I use my work mail address off a flash drive. On the machines at work that have ADSL internet access sending and receiving works fine. On the machines that have WIFI internet access I have to change my smtp server settings to the WIFI company's smtp server because the company that is hosting our website uses spamcop on their servers so our normal company smtp blocks messages because it doesn't like the IP address I'm sending from. Yesterday on my home pc on Vodacom HSDPA I got the spamcop error message again :( Which smtp server should I use in this case seeing that I don't use Vodamail? And is there any smtp server that will work on all 3 networks mentioned above so that I don't have to keep changing it?

I recommend having a look to see if Vodacom's own firewalls might be blocking incoming packets from the likes of Yahoo etc during the whole smtp protocol thing...
No, not at all, was just a FYI.

Posting this kind of info is no attempt to not fix the problem. Rather I post this type of info to give a heads-up on the complexities of these kind of environments. Most forumites are in related industries and enjoy discussing these kind of issues.

I could make like some of the other operators and never give any info out, outside of 'We are attending to the problem' type of responses, but that's not what the forum is about.
I created a distinct thread about email being down. But my thread was dumped in this one. I don't care to read all non related stuff.

Fact. Email is down. This is unacceptable.

Neither theirs nor your suggested option is acceptable.

Email should just work. If down it should just be fixed.
I work/ed in IT for many years with 24/7 mission critical systems. We did what was required to be up 99.9%

Hi All, have also been experiencing smtp problems this weekend. Have been trying to set up my gmail account in outlook - but the 'test' says the server is not responding. Called vodacom call centre 3 times, one person advised 'smtp.vodamail.co.za', someone else suggested 'smtp.vodacom.co.za'. The last person said the server is down?? There is no mention of this on 'vodacom4me'? Any suggestions? Thanks :) Megan

Either one will do - they point to the same server. There were problems with the server, but it did appear to be OK again from about 3pm. :D

Thanks Zax and ic... I tried to send the test message again (with smtp.vodacom.co.za) and I'm still not winning. Am in the process of checking out the google site - most of the advice points to updates, so will do so and attempt it again :)

I did not suggest any option.

No-one would disagree that these systems should not be 99.9% available and everyone at Vodacom strives to make these kind of numbers. You seem to assume it was not taken seriously and attended to with due importance. Obviously it was.

If you feel that you have special experience on how to keep a network and systems with 20 million users available 99.9%, please drop me a PM. Vodacom strives to employ top people in the industry and we would love to chat with you. (no joke)

The e-mail was restore earlier today, around lunch time. Can you now work?

Email being down for such a period suggests this to me. To fix problems after the event is too late. What is being done preemptively to avoid a mission critical system to be down for this length of time?

Firstly, thank you. I'm not in the market. :)
Second, for instance, if VC is not already running on IBM server/s or mainframe/s, maybe VC needs to consider such.
Third, for instance; is failover in place?

Great!

I can maybe arrange that you visit the computer centers in Midrand. These are not Mickey Mouse systems. Don't think there are many companies in SA today who must cater for millions of users, so these are massive machines, running full redundancy everywhere, huge IBM blade Servers with lots and lots of CPU's.

It seems the mail problems was more related to a firewall that developed an illicit taste for SMTP packets than a server issue.

PS. The job offer was no joke. And it applies to any of you clever people out there.....As you know we're building a (hopefully) kick-@ss ISP.....

I took it as sincere; personally not in market. But thank you anyway.

I'm taking a wild guess here: the above can't be done [yet] ?

Either you mail provider must provide a SMTP server that's not sensitive to the bearer network (typically authenticated SMTP servers will do this) or you need to swap between SMTP relays.

I can't quite understand why e-mail clients don't do this. It's simple enough to have a set of settings per network interface you're connecting with. And it would remove the frustration you see when switching bearers.

I think most mail hosting ISP's provide this option now days.

3g Smtp

hi. been having some problems with sending mails this morning. mail woudnt leave the outbox but if i tried different smtp's i would get relay bounce backs. after trying a telnet to the vodacom smtp i got redirected to a saix smtp..... is this normal for the redirect to a saix smtp as im sure its not supposed to be.

Never heard of this before, will check. You're using smtp.vodacom.co.za?

I am also trying to send via smtp.vodacom.co.za this afternoon, but my mail client can't connect ... I am using the internetvpn AP (but not connected to a VPN currently). nslookup returns 196.11.146.148 as the smtp server's IP

EDIT: my IS ADSL line reports the same IP address

EDIT 2: Switched to internet AP and it went through fine

v3g, is the environment set up like this (as the internetvpn IPs are public)?

All the apn's should see the smtp server. Can you test with the internetvpn apn again, when you get a chance?
