So I went to Capitec

Are you aware you get charged 50 cent per sms. I cancelled that service with immediate effect. Purchased their token.

40 cents per sms. I disabled INCOMING notifications. The cost to be warned about OUTGOING monies is worth it to me.....

Most banks would have an issue with an ID in too bad a condition and printed proof of residence.... so don't make that is a Capitec specific issue.

Had issues with Nedbank due to an old ID book they wouldn't assist me to open an investment account. I had to go to home affairs apply for a new ID & temporary ID. What a mission..

With regards to Utility/Munciplities as proof of address. They explicitly want the original. I read their terms and condition & found a clause whereby copies would be accepted. The branch manager helped me open the account.

World is going paperless and emailed statements are the way to go. Banks need to catch a wake up in this regard...

I check on a regular basis on both my bank accounts about the activity. Proud you moved to Capitec. I laugh at people who say they pay R199 / 99 everything is included. With Capitec you'll save, better interest rate with them

I have been with them for 10 days and am very impressed. I have kept my FNB gold cheque account open (R31.50 bank charges pm) so as to avoid the headache with changing a bank account for my SARS refund in July. I might still downgrade the account further to a Smart Account just to keep the account number and have the account as a backup in case Capitec has transaction issues.

I have changed my purchasing habits to use my Virgin Money CC exclusively for all retail and online purchases throughout the month and then settle it at next payday - earning Capitec interest on my salary until that date which more than covers my Capitec bank charges.

Making money work for you :)

Lets see here.....

EBucks earned last month = 30 000
Makro voucher purchased = R4 000
4mb uncapped internet value = R400
Bank fees = R350 across all FNB products.
Average value extracted from FNB every month over the last 5 years = R4 000.00 per month.
FNB pays me to bank with them close to R50 000 per year.

Yes, but that's because you spend a lot and in a way that earns ebucks.

A friend had his capitec card cloned
They withdrew r5k
Tried to cancel card
While doing thay they withdrawn money
His limit was r1k tho
They only refunded him the 4k
Told him the limit amount of r1k not thier problem

Wtf. You serious?

Nothing that I wouldn't spend on any other account. Just normal transactions for our household. Prepaid airtime, checkers, fuel, municipal accounts, telkom, etc.

There is this assumption you have to spend unnecessarily to earn eBucks. I don't spend more to earn more. That's just stupid.

But I assume you have a credit card, garage card, home loan etc?

Only credit card and cheque account no home loan with FNB and no garage card. Bond is with standard bank.

My wife and I do however only transact on my account though. She transfers a lump sum at the end of every month to me and I have an additional credit card for her.

You've got big amounts through that account hence the big ebucks earn back - you are the exception.

Majority of us have debit orders (no ebucks to be earned) and a few account payments and then a lower to middle class amount of money left to live for the month - many of us would struggle to even qualify for ebucks.

I used to qualify, but FNB have made it harder and harder each year. I will take the interest from Capitec rather. First 10 days with them I earned R15 in interest - that is 1500 worth the equivalent ebucks FNB would've given me if I could've qualified...

Plus, with FNB, I would need to park R9k in the account to get the R100-R140pm unlimited pricing cost waived. Capitec fees for me amount to R25

You can reduce the R32 to R5 for cash withdrawls by just planning ahead and drawing from cashiers at PnP or Checkers....

So for R27 a month you're prepared to queue in PnP or Checkers four times? You'd have to pay me a lot more than that to tempt me into that system.

I spend what I normally would, just a few behavioural changes to get to eBucks L5 (things like drawing cash @till).

I usually get between 5,000 - 10,000 eBucks (R500 - R1,000) every month. Total monthly spend in banking fees across all products (home loan, CC, cheque account etc.) is around R200.

Still can't believe that people think it's a "feature" for them to receive SMS notifications, and get charged for it...

Nope, not in the context of doing your banking in a supermarket. What is it?

When walk into Checkers/PicknPay/Spar there's this small section where you can buy the paper/airtime/ciggies with no queue.
