Guys lets stay focused here! The main question still stands. Is it more expensive to make a phone call from Apple (someone also added Samsung) other than nokia and blackberry?

Of course it is. Why on earth would you think it would be the same? The pricing of the phone, packages, everything is different on the iPhone. You can thank royalties and our crap APN system for that. Apple have no morals. This is why Motorola were bought by Google. They bought them for their patents so that their phones didn't have to pay royalties to Apple once on the network and so that they could attempt to move the patent into the free-to-offer category.

It's quite simple really. Think of it this way:

Apple uses different APNs
Different APNs result in different rates (or the same if the network decide to absorb the costs) but very different termination rates and times.
Apple devices use proprietary signal boosting technology that only works on specific APNs. For the networks to use this technology (i.e. to be able to cater for Apple devices) they have to license hardware and software on the cell towers to cater for this. This is why they use different APNs. (making sense now, hey?)
This results in higher charges.

I'm a mobile Objective C developer. The networks are notified via USSD-42 of the charges, they then charge that into your defactored call rate. The networks get a faunal commission on the protocol forwarding rate - differing per network.

Fundamental question: When making a phone call what data is sent to the network provider? And how then do they reroute the whole world to California for apple to eat money and then get the call back to Mzanzi to Mr Van da wat wat on the next line? In real time?

It's incredibly simple. Apple own the hardware and software rights. Networks have to utilise them to cater for Apple devices. These systems intentionally terminate at different rates and times.

I other words, it costs networks far more money to cater for Apple than it does to cater to the rest of the market. So the real thieves here are the networks for not absorbing the costs, and Apple for continuing to charge licensing (for use) and royalties for every call...

I assume the same way Opera Mini routes all data to their servers for compression before forwarding to your device. But a more knowledgeable forumite might know the specifics.

Very well, I admit, I am an Apple employee. It is true, we do charge a considerably higher amount when calls are made, to account for the antennagate saga of a few years ago. As if we would really give dual antennae in a device for free? This man has an idea of how we do it, but for legal reasons I am unable to disclose any further information:

Could you please go into more detail? If then this is how they run why are hackers not busy exploiting this for their own good? If this so called tap and make cheap call apps do exist, how are they freely available on app stores in plain sight of network providers? Is that not stealing from them?

APNs determine how it is routed. Locally, it costs more. Where it routes internationally I don't know. That would be on the network backend side. I don't know enough about that, but I'm not sure if it's correct. It might be, as Apple do release data to the authorities, as they have admitted. So how they get that data? Well, it makes sense now, doesn't it? It works on their proprietary systems...

I know the heading does not really give out much but bear with me here and read two more sentences.

I have a friend who during a chat said to me it costs more to make a phone call from and Iphone then it does from a blackberry :D . I was not a prick about it so I went on to listen, she (and apparently a whole community of her friends) are convinced that because you pay so much for the phone you also pay way more to make calls on these devices :D:D:D:D:D:D .

Anyway so I plan on sending her a link to this post... provided it doesn't cost too much airtime on phone to open it, LOL.

Can someone please help me to provide some convincing knowledge to a friend.

Do you know how much calls cost if you phone has flappy bird on.. tell your friends to be careful out there and make sure they know whats loaded on their phones. :p

Shame hey, he did not believe me, the networks are reimbursed by the “surveillance” companies due to the additional costs. He can actually go and Google it… and have to make some back by charging the consumer, we are the unlucky ones with the R/$ exchange :mad:

Because it is Apple proprietary software and hardware. You can't easily intercept it, unlike ordinary GSM networks. And people have created spoof dialers, but you certainly won't find them in the Appstore. They're typically sold on the dark-net, and I ain't going near there, thank you very much. I'll rather just avoid Apple all together...
