I think this thread will gather momentum again these next few weeks as R6 is released...
there are also some promising looking apps on the way from Cellphonesoft
*NB tip of the day *
for those ( like me !) who find the built in pdf reader abysmal a very usable solution is the mobipocket reader. Drop the PDF file into the desktop mobireader and it converts it into a text file with very nice editing options once the file is on the phone ( select a block of text with a touch of the stylus, lift the stylus, mobireader pops up a little dialog box, select highlight on it, voila ! )
The formatting generally comes out very well and scrolling through the converted text in mobipocket reader is much faster than waiting for pdf+ to render it

P990i - Media Player Slow to Start a Song ?
Does anyone else find the songs slow to load with the media player ?
My situation :-
- A 2 GB card and some 900 songs on it.
- Using the default P990i Media Player
- Only use the auto generated lists of 'Artist' etc, no custom play list.
- If I select a new artist to play it takes 4-5 minutes before the song starts to play.
Is it buffering ?
This seems really long by any standards.
Thoughts oh wise people ?

that does not sound right. My phone's songs load instantly (less than a second) with the built in Music player.
My setup is the same is yours.
Things to check:
Your memorystick - what make is it? Is it not perhaps a grey product. That might explain why it is slow. If that's the case, your 3rd party apps you installed on the stick might also open up slowly. Do a test with your (small) original stick that came with your phone.
The other thing to check: Check your sample rate of your MP3s. It is not excessively high sampled? I don't know the standerds, but yours might have been ripped/created by software that used non-standard sample rates..
Can't think of any other reasons.
To be drastic and you're getting desperate, you can always backup and reformat your memory stick on a pc and try again.

The stick is original Sony and I formatted it in the phone when I first got it. I have just found that the more songs I have added to the stick, the longer it takes to load up the first song.
All songs are sampled by me down to 48 kbps because (1) I don't think you'll notice anything higher on such headphones (CDs are only 40 or 48 kbps in any case) and (2) you can fit far more songs on.
I also don't have any 3rd party apps on the memory stick.
Maybe your advice to format & copy the songs back could work.

Might be a problem with that song? Just rip it to mp3 again & see what happens. Had the same problem with a song I copied to my Sony Walkman - but it came straight from my Bearshare folder...no wonder!

What I can recommend is to reflash your phone and DONT do any restores from previous backups (except contacts etc via an Outlook sync).
2nd option is to Master Reset your phone, but that will make you lose some of your built-in themes, templates, sounds etc. Rather flash in my opinion.
Anybody else have any ideas?

PaddyTM - you need an app called SMS diary ( if you want to read the SMS's on your PC. If you just want to back them up there I think the unified inbox from the PC suite backup should be sufficient )

No, aqualung, not yet.
I went to Centurion Mall on Saturday and checked at all the MTN and Vodacom shops, Autopage, etc - they don't have it in stock. Autopage had Walkman earphones, but the ones you must clip round your ears.
Told the guy I want the 'ear-bud' Walkman earphones, cos I'm using that with my mp3 Walkman (sounds fantastic) and really like the sound of it.
Well, will most probably have to go to Vodaworld in Midrand on Saturday...maybe I'll find it there.

Greetings all. I am back from my trip to jo'burg. Had an excellent meeting there. I impressed all present when I discretely whipped out my "you know what" and started making use of it rather nonchalantly on the table in plain sight of everyone. I certainly got a few interested looks from the others around the table!
I particularly like the ability to draw simple diagrams which were being discussed and saving them for later reference / electronic distribution. This ability also came in handy later in the meeting when things got a bit boring and I designed a very amusing caricature of one particularly annoying manager. I'll have to be careful not to distribute that one along with the structural design decisions diagrams.
On the down side, I unfortunately still haven't managed to use the wifi successfuly. I tried various locations around the airport which were advertised as hotspots, and although I could see the connection points with the scan, I simply couldn't get a connection going. I guess I was supposed to go into the stores (PostNet/Mweb etc) and organise (read:"pay for") permission for my phone to connect to their hotspot before being allowed a connection. Anyway, I'll try play with it again at our local Mugg&Bean when I get a chance.
Oh and by the way I did get myself a 4GB card in jhb after all. Vodacom stores apparently are selling it for R900 nowadays which I only found out after I'd spent a bit more than that at an electronics shop in East Rand Mall. Oh well, I'm still very happy with mine.
I did however discover one annoying thing after loading up a few hundred MB of music files. Maybe someone could help me out here. When playing my files in the media player, the player gets shut down after a few songs by Swiss Manager. However there doesn't seem to be a way to exclude the player from being closed. Why does SM close the media player? Seems a bit dumb. The SM document seems to suggest there is an icon for excluding programs from shutdown, but I don't see that icon when selecting media player.

Hi Vertigo, aqualung or Gecko should be with you shortly...they are the Swiss Manager experts. I don't use it anymore, uninstalled it after the latest firmware.

Hi Vertigo,
I think you must have Swisss Manager PRO for this. If you do, run your Media (music) player, click on your SMPro icon and go to the Task Manager. SCROLL down with your scroll wheel to your media player (don't tap on it with your stylus), and once selected, tap on the "information-like" looking icon on the bottom left (yellow with an black "i").
You will see a new window with two tabs. On the first tab called "Manage", there will be an "Include in End all" option with a radio button. By default this is selected. In this case you must deselect it to make sure the media player won't be closed down with random memory reclaims by Swiss Manager Pro itself.

There's no thing as a dumb question.
You can do this by going to your phone's Control Panel. Then you will find it under the "Other" option.
D now thAt sounds weird!)(I still recommend reflashing your phone over Master Resetting it)
