Sony Ericsson P990i

P990i Battry Life

How do you guys manage playing MP3's on the P990i. I cant get by the end of the day just with my calls before the battery is shot. I guess you use your devices just for the media....:)
 
Not at all.

My phone is used daily to surf the net, read ebooks and documents, take pictures , play chess, music AND send sms's and make calls.( and I have 60-70% battey at day's end )

Suggestions:
Switch off 3G unless you really need it ( a big battery killer )
Ditto bluetooth ( or enable it's power saving option )
Turn screen brightness down to 60-70 % ( it's still very bright in all but direct sunlight )
Disabling the constantly on GPRS also works for some ( the phone automatically switches it on and off for MMS, internet access )

LCG seems to use my default internet settings, didn't have to do any work there, it will use the wireless lan by preference ( at home ) if wifi enabled on phone
agree track sorting seems a little lacking ( create subfolders within the music folder ? A clumsy workaround ) I'll pop over to their site and see what the developers have to say

Aqualung is right - and the biggest culprit must be 3G. I get two days usage out of my phone, but I'm a heavy user. :)

I get at least 3 days even with 3G permanently switched on. My bluetooth is permanently on with power save mode, my gprs switches only on on demand like aqualung's phone, my screen's brightness is set at 60%. I send&receive approximately 10 SMSs a day, with an average of 20 minutes of talk time on the phone. Internet surfing for about 10 mins average, and RSS feeder running updates 3 times a day. Listen to music approx. 20 mins average per day as well.
Otherwise I am not really a heavy user.

I think the screen's brightness makes the difference for me.

Yebo Yes!

My ringtone is also plain & simple (I use the 'Office Phone' one), think a full mp3 ringtone will also cause the battery to drain faster - well, that's if you get a lot of phone calls...
 
P990i Tips

Here's a selection of tips for your P990 which I found on another site:

1. Disable handwriting recognition for snappier interface .

2. Select 'Large cache' in Opera .

3. To enable flash light in video capturing mode, enable light in picture mode, hold shutter button halfway, turn jog-dial to video mode.

4. Enable USB file transfer in 'Connections' to allow fast file copy over USB cable.

5. Set Opera zoom to 80% for overview and clear text.

6. If software update fails, try deleting blob_fs folder and install latest Java client, update will erase everything on the phone memory.

7. Set camera picture quality to 'Fine'.

8. Mute camera shutter sound.

9. Limit backlight brightness to 25-80% .

10. Disable wlan and 3G network support when not needed in 'Mobile networks' and 'WLAN' menus respectively to Increase Battery Life.

11. Calibrate the touch screen using the 'Setup wizard'.

12. Turn off GPRS to disable continuous GPRS signal search, will still work and turn on when needed (i.e. MMS), found in 'Internet Accounts', 'More',
'Options' and 'CS Only' .

13. To enter service menu, flip closed: jog-dial up, *, down, down, *, down, * - flip open/removed: in phone application, jog-dial up, touch *, down, down, *, down, * .

Haven't tried all of above tips yet, but some of them look useful.

*PS just actually checked my screen brightness - it's on 30% ! And still pretty bright...

Can someone help me please. I downloaded some games from mobile9.com. They come in .zip format containing lots of files including .class, .png, .dat etc.

It certainly looks like a file that should be .jar rather than .zip. However, if I rename it to .jar and try to install with my SE application installer, it gives me an error:

(80070005)
Access is denied.

Why doesn't the application manager install them?

PS I just found out that if I just rename them to .jar and copy them as files to the phone, I can actually install them on the phone itself. Odd.

That is something that has changed from the P910i to the P990i - the P910i needed the pc suite to install software, whereas the P990i doesn't need that anymore. You just copy the files to the P990i and install it from the phone.

Oh ok. Well I guess it makes life easier in some respects. Can copy a bunch of files and then install them on the move if you want to or pass them around easier.

It's just that some applications did install just fine with the application installer before, and in a way it's nice installing straight from PC and not needing to store the actual files on the phone. Saves space!
Not that space is really an issue with my 4GB card barely half full (even with a couple of hours of music sitting on it)

Yes, when I installed the Vista theme on my P990i, the PC Suite basically just copies it across to the phone and then tells you that you must continue the installation on the phone.

It makes sense to me, cos most laptops (for desktop, just get a bluetooth dongle) have bluetooth support, so it's easy to send files across + you don't need the pc suite if you want to install software on your phone.
 
Help I can't get my movie to play :(

I converted a movie on my computer using M3. I chose highest quality settings for P990 and converted it to Mpeg-4 Multiplexed File. After copying the 489MB file to the phone it refuses to open, stating simply "There have been problems trying to open the file. Do you want to try again?".

Why doesn't it work?

Sounds like the file is corrupt. Might have to re-do the movie with M3.

I succeeded twice with my P910i, hence the two screen replacements and the need for a Martin Fields screen protector for my P990i... :o
 
Vertigo, I don't use M3 ( Mac user :) )

I have had the same problem in the past when trying to play a converted movie as a whole - I think the video player may object to playing files above a certain size

My workaround is to encode the movie in 2-3 segments ( of say max 150 MB each )...the movie played flawlessly after this

Oh ok. I guess I can do that then. I wonder what the size limit actually is. e.g. Can the segments be 300MB? Maybe I must just play with it a bit.

I usually split my files up into 150Mb segments. That's approximately 30 minutes of video time.
