Sony Ericsson P990i

Ok, so I finally got my 4GB stick :D Paid R800 for it. (Sony) I think it's a good price, as the 2GB is around R600. ;)

Only issue I had with them was the long delay in getting the stick. I needed one in a hurry, for a photo shoot this weekend.

So I went with this one http://www.sybaritic.co.za/store/product_info.php?cPath=322_162&products_id=11188

Couple bucks more but I had to have it.

I cant get myself to trust the super low prices i see on Bid or Buy. I need a reasonably fast card for photography, the fake cards are a lot slower than the real thing from what I hear. Not saying that all of them are fake, just worried at those prices that they might be and then put the shots at risk.

Ps

Gaming version is exactly the same as normal version, just a different colour.

Tip of the day

For those who haven't yet tried it, "Xplore" from lonelycatgames is an excellent piece of software ( shareware )

It's basically a file browser and manager ( some of it's functions overlap with Swiss manager )

Pluses : Superb picture browser that opens pics ( a tad faster than the built in one ) with nifty hotkey support for picture zoom option in FC mode

Hotkeys to 9 most commonly accessed folders

Text reader allows one to read Word files in FC mode

I like it !

:)

@ aqualung

When you referred to X-Plorer picture browser capabilities, does it have a thumbnail view?

New FW R6D23 is out.

Ah, cheers, Gecko!

I'll first wait to see what's the major changes in this firmware, before I install it.

I'ts difficult to go for an update & have to reinstall everything now, cos my phone is working so well with the R5 firmware...

That is a VERY good price! Where did you get it from?

Got it from local Vodashop outlet. My friend owns the place :D Marked price is R1050. If you want I could speak to him about a discount for u ;) Maybe for the 8GB ;)

W960

The W960 ( http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp...001&template=pp1_1_1&zone=pp&lm=pp1&pid=10908 ) is the kinda phone I was after when I got my p990. Only thing missing from its specs is hsdpa. I tend to type faster on the alphanumric with t9 than on the qwerty. I like the fact that a bluetooth headset and the cool walkman headset are bundled in box. The only thing i'd fork out more on after that would be the new GPS receiver if the price is right and if I need it.:)

I agree. And it is a beautiful looking phone. My wife is due for an upgrade in September, but now she is considering waiting for this one. She always used Nokia, but for the last 6 months took over my P910i. Now she's converted!

After upgrading my phone to the latest FW, I did a Settings, Unified Inbox and Notes Restore via the PC Suite - all perfect.

Did a Contacts, Calendar, Notes and Bookmarks restore via sync with Outlook - all perfect.

When you want to 'safely' try to use the Backup and Restore function of the new PC Suite (1.3.19), make sure you delete all your OLD backups from your previous attempts. Very important! You can also manually delete these backup files at the following location on your PC:

C:\Documents and Settings\<your Windows Login Name>\Application Data\Teleca\Backup Manager\Backup Archive\3.0\

I did not Backup and Restore my 3rd Party apps on my C-Drive. The few 3rd party apps I had on my memorystick tried to reinstall themselves - all unsuccessful except TomTom.

So all in all I am pleasantly surprised by the Restore function.

I get about 14.2M. I will still test the built-in Task Manager's ability to reclaim memory later.

And overall performance of the menus do seem a bit quicker, but not much. Contacts do seems faster.

I get 14.1M

The memory management does seem to have been tightened up...

After a couple hours of running multiple apps till the phone screamed, then allowing SMPro to close them when idle, free RAM settles down to 7.3-7.5M ( this is with Messaging left running in the background to test for that insidious memory leak it seemed to generate.

Of course the next few days will tell as far as this goes !)

As mentioned, thumbnails on the picture gallery are much clearer.

Will test autofocus today ( it's apparently been fixed ).

Thanks for the head's up Gecko - I'd given up waiting for this FW ( and nearly spilled coffee across my keyboard when I read your post ! ):)

Please explain how you got that to work on the P990. Links please. i have been waiting for a solution for SA for quite a while.

Ok, I took the plunge & installed the latest firmware, after making a backup of all the settings on my P990i (the new PC Suite is really good) - it would seem this upgrade is not a minor one.

1. Yes, the autofocus on the camera has been fixed!! Much quicker to focus and snap.
2. The 'soft' alarm has been fixed - El Trumpet had me falling out of the bed!
3. Cell Information is working again!! I know, I know, guess nobody else really use this, but it just looks very cool on my phone. (If you minimize the radio or music player, it still shows Cell Information).
4. Thumbnails in Contacts Manager is not 'grainy' anymore.
5. Startup is 2.4 seconds faster - I bet aqualung will go and time it.... :)
6. New version of Opera - will check it out later.
7. Memory management is good - I get 14.8MB at startup, maybe the old trick - uninstall Vijay Singh Gholf - still works?
8. There is a now a 'Payment Transactions' menu under Control Panel/Other -but it's an empty menu? Maybe SE's big boss played around with the firmware before they posted it on SEUS? :p

Will post other changes as I explore the new firmware further. ;)
