Uh, yes. Insightful me. :p

It's just a suggestion, based on some press releases from SE in the last couple of months, reading between the lines, and having an impression of what cellphone specs are popular in Asia ( just news articles again really ).

Whether or not SE actually plans to abandon or shrink down their smartphone offerings I really don't know.

They bought UIQ, now they need to head it in the right direction.

Obviously things took a bad turn last week when we thought we'd all been left out in the cold.

Still, if you think about the sheer number of mobile users in Asia, selling some Walkman phones there can only be good for SE's bottom line.

PS according to makbil from my-symbian, SE may consider ongoing FW updates beyond August, based on "user feedback".

We must've really rocked the boat !

lol, i just laugh at us "guessing".... we have NO clue what is going on at SE headquaters, convinced theyve abandoned us p990 users.... SE is not a mickey mouse company with like two blokes deciding um lets stop development on p990. if development on p990 is stopping believe me it must be a huge decision for them. not just a 5 minute boardmeeting. you probably find its got something to do with iphone release.... time to build the ultimate smartphone to beat iphone.... who knows we will never ever know.

sure some of us are getting freaked out about "unofficial" announcements... i say proof is in the pudding, my p990 is better than it ever was, sure its not perfect.... but its a much better machine than the n95 (which by the way is also full of bugs and restarts etc)

Well, the way ol' Niklas Sivander treated us with his version of an 'official' SonyEricsson statement, I almost came to the conclusion that SE is indeed a 'mickey mouse' company.

Mind you, it might be that Johan just caught ol' Sivander at a bad time, when he phoned his mentor for some guidance on the matter - I suspect ol' Sivander was enjoying the midsummer party in Sweden (this is just speculation, but I'll ask aqualung to analyze). :confused:

I've been to Sweden for a midsummer party and can confirm that it is very unwise to issue statements after a bottle of Absolut vodka & dancing round a pole with four meatballs in your mouth. :eek:

Thanks beserkowitz! I've tested it via my Skype, MSN, Gtalk - chat and VOIP calls - and it works great. Just spoke to Ares in Portugal via Skype and GTalk (with 3G connectivity), and although it breaks up now and then, it works really well and sounds clear. I'm impressed.
 
I just installed Fring & it works well, but what I want to know is if there has been any clarification on MTN's VOIP charges, I don't want to get my bill and discover they've decided to charge me R21 per meg for VOIp, does anyone know if they have officially dealt with this? Or should I just port to Vodacom with my contract ending next month?

According to Vodacom's Data rates, their VOIP rate is R10 /MB. If MTN started to charge VOIP rates, I am sure Vodacom will follow soon. Perhaps it is time to start to use Vodacom's Iburst........

Johan (SE Developer) just gave us more feedback on the SE DEV Forum:

Hi all and sorry once again for the late feedback. I am currently on leave of absence (will be back in 8 days) so I won’t be able to participate in a high degree.
First of all I have to say you all have done a great job on the wiki with the voting system. As I have said before some of the reported bugs are to vague to reproduce, some of them seems user specific and some of them are feature requests or change requests that are not a part of the product specification which makes them outside the product scope so to speak. The closest thing to the product specification is the white paper which you all can download from here:

Any firmware release is to address only legitimate issues that are within the scope of the original product specifications.

Regarding the M600:
I haven’t heard of any future development on M600, so far the decision on continuing firmware development is only for P990 and W950, nothing else has been said I’m sorry to say.
Finally, I have gotten a response from R&D that I hope will address the memory leak discussions. There are three parts of the design of the phone that can mislead the user into thinking that the device has little memory available or that there are memory leaks:

1) Firstly, some users are concerned since the phone does not report the same amount of free memory at startup as it does after being used for a while. This is due the fact that the OS is very much a "late creation" system - in the majority of cases applications or features only get loaded into the system the first time you use them. This means that after using the phone for a while it will have loaded in lots of system resources that weren't loaded in on first start up (when you hadn't started using all functions). Hence shutting down all user applications will not restore you to the level of free RAM you had at first startup of the device, since the OS itself keeps some resources loaded for future use and therefore is now using more memory. This could be mistaken for a memory leak, which it is not.

2) The UIQ 3 software design of the device is such that it by default leaves all applications running so you can easily switch between them (multitask). Only when the RAM drops below a certain limit does the system take action to restore some RAM. The Memory Manager handles this and shuts things down progressively. To start with, it requests idle background applications to shutdown, resorting to forced shut down of applications only when necessary. Expressed a little differently, in order to improve user experience the phone tries to keep as many applications active as possible and only closes down applications when absolutely necessary, so in normal operation of the phone, there should be almost no free RAM. This is as designed and is not a memory leak.

3) The task list application reports only some of the RAM used by applications, i.e. it only shows how much RAM they allocated at start-up. E.g. it may say the Web browser uses up only 115K, when it is actually using several megabytes when you are viewing webpages. Hence if the user looks to the Task List application to understand what is using up all the RAM, he/she will think the applications are using up only a small part and that the phone "leaks" the rest of the RAM, which is not the case.

Since commercial launch of the P990 last year we have found some problem areas that have been corrected but the biggest improvements have been made to the Memory Manager logic where we now shut down applications in a more selective way, as described in number 2 above. Checking for memory leaks is an integral part of the development and testing process.

question

can the networks differentiate between regular data and voip data? isnt data just data
