Speeds Better?

FSK!! I knew i spoke to soon. Speeds back down to a 56k..... "These are the days of our lives" aint very happy lives. Sentech just gives us a taste of bandwidth then takes it away :(

Check your packet loss, I can almost guarantee that you have 10% or more. That's what screws up the speed.

If you're downloading, get a multi thread download manager - Getright or similar, you'll be able to ramp up your speeds.

If I do a single thread download on http or ftp I get about 4-6KB/s. With multiple threads (the more the better) I can consistently get over 12KB/s and mostly around 14KB/s. These are my stats from BW meter over the last couple of days by hour. (Where there is no, or very low download, usually that means that I've been disconnected or the network is down):

As you can see, while the network is up, I can get around 44MB/hour download average..almost 13KB/s. Multiple threads overcome the TCP backing off problem.

The problem is one can't use multithreading with bittorrent and Dc++ so my downloads are stuck at a ****ty sub 1K/s

I've noticed something really weird with single-threaded downloads - they sometimes speed up when you start other unrelated single-threaded downloads or start browsing multiple websites while you're downloading. This seems illogical as you would think that that using extra bandwidth by browsing would cause the download to slow down.

Anybody else get this? Maybe one of the tcp/ip gurus here could come up with an explanation of why this would happen.

garp

I have the same thing happening. Overnet would be running at 1- 2Kb/s and then I start browsing and it picks up. You can add more files to download as well and then your total for all the downloads increase, but the moment you cancel the other downloads your total speed drops again. P2P must be multithreaded to work not so?

Just downloaded the Carte Blanche Clip http://www.mybroadband.co.za/media/cb.zip

Yeah baby. That's more the speed I wanted.
MW128 package, Downloaded with GetRight with 4 threads

This has to be related to Sentech's bandwidth (mis)management system.

I suggest that you e-mail the call centre and update your ticket with this info. The more users that give concrete examples of the suckiness of their network, the more likely they are to actually fix it by end August.

Erm, BT and DC++ DO use multithreading. Each source is a thread, and you get the file from multiple sources.
