No, no... I like your philosophy much better. One where we need no structure, combinations and overall philosophy of how we'd like to play the game. One where we play an unpracticed, directionless vomit of running/stampkar/forward/back/open/defensive AND attacking rugby and magically pull wins, and I presume handkerchiefs and bunnies, out of our asses from the get-go... Where do I sign up for that?

The only reason you see it in New Zealand is that they 'recently adopted enterprising rugby into their national test seasons, but the Europeans have played this rugby on club level since yonks ago.

Rassie may not be the greatest coach on the books, but he knows SA rugby on management level where he has served as general manager and has been a great administrator at Munster where he won the 2016/17 Pro 12 season coaching title.

In my opinion, Rassie may very well be the right choice and since he is young, an accomplished rugby player, versed in our and European rugby, he may be around longer than many may think. One day he will be ‘the’ big wig at SARU. Why people doubt him is beyond me, have the respect to see him be trialled.

Not to mention, Plumtree is likely to take over at the Hurricanes.

Unofficially TimesLIVE has been informed that director of rugby Rassie Erasmus would take up the position as head of a coaching group‚ which includes SA Rugby employees such as defence coach specialist Jacques Nienaber.

But in a statement SA Rugby didn’t go as far as naming Erasmus as Coetzee’s successor‚ rather opaquely indicating that he would be the coach even if he isn’t 'called Springbok coach'.

“The Rugby Department will manage the responsibilities of the Springbok coach‚ until the national team’s coaching and management group for 2018 is confirmed later this month‚” SA Rugby’s statement read.

I don't think that he will ever be named head coach. The question is rather how they will structure the coaching hierarchy? More will be made known later this month.

I doubt that they will name his deputy head coach… whomever this may be. Through time the media will most likely say it, that Rassie is the head coach.

I don't think that's quite fair.

Part of the problem is the Boks haven't had a coach, SARU and fans that would accept a rebuilding phase with a number of losses, if an improvement plan was actually put in place.

What rather happens is that the new coach tries to implement something new but then buckles under pressure after a few losses and goes back to old game plans which are outdated. Then they don't win anyway and we're back to square one.

Springbok media advisory
SA Rugby will announce the Springbok management for 2018 via an electronic media release at 11h30 on Thursday, 1 March 2018. This will be followed by a media conference with the new Springbok coach, starting at 13h00 at the SuperSport studios in Randburg, Johannesburg.
 
Anybody know if and where this will be aired?

Well, as director of rugby he is formally and technically the head coach in hierarchy. If they named any other person as head (or Springbok) coach it would have been a farce to entertain transformation. By announcing Rassie in this role, they called it as it is.

Strange no-one is saying anything on the new coaching team.

Jacques Nienaber, Pieter de Villiers, two big contributions to this rebuild. I know Stick is there, but many I know are under the impression that Erasmus will better guide Stick in his position. All-in-all, other than Stick going by experience, this is a superb setup.

All they need to do now is to welcome back our European stock, make every player in the stable available to represent the Springboks. Obviously, club negotiations and their conditions and terms will take precedence, but we will have a larger ‘quality’ player base. I am glad that we do have black and coloured players abroad now and their improvement is noticeable. Clearly, in my opinion, there is something wrong at the WP/Stormers player development camp and needs to be addressed.

I am happy with the management team, no complaints. It is also good that the PRO14 and Super Rugby coaches are still at their posts to develop the broader contingency, player and game plan.

This may be best we had since the Jake White heyday.

Awesome to have Rassie and snorre back. Now I can watch rugby again.
