Star Citizen

Thanks. I'm really just starting out with SC - any tips and resources which I should really know?

Eish... where to start. Not sure if you ever watched Wing mans hanger back in the day? That was helleva interesting. Eric 'Wingman' Peterson left them to start his own reboot of Descent underground etc so the show was converted to Around the Verse.

I sorta stopped following the weekly media they push out as its mostly alot of the same stuff. The early days of Around the Verse are quite painful to watch. They do get better though, with each episode. Watch some of that if you are interested. They try and keep you fairly updated.

As of right now, I sorta know where they want this game to go, along with my own hopes and dreams and I am just sitting back getting on with my life while they work out the nitty gritty.

I do understand, and did from the start, that his is a long haul trip, marathon, with no specified due date of release. Rather it will be released when its ready. This doesnt gel with many people who dont understand the concept of pledging.

Best advice I can give now is being patient and playing what is available already. Ive already clocked more hours in Arena Commander (Vanduul Swarm) than many fully released titles, such as ED (Which is horse turd in comparison when it comes to tech and engine).

Have you got Voice Attack? Check that out, and get a profile called A.N.N.A from the RSI forums. Its probably the best voice attack profile ive ever come across. Has support for most of the ships.

Also look to invest in a hotas setup if you enjoy flight sims. I am unsure whether the KB/M will outfly the Hotas.. alot of mixed opinions on this and will probably come down to a few factors such as gimballed weapons etc etc.

We have quite a number of discussions on the facebook group, as well as a few arguments :p but there is quite a bit of content there as well.

Dont get sold into buying new ships etc when the sales come up. This is just cash injections the devs need/want for continued development. What they have now is technically enough to complete the job. All ships can be bought ingame with earned credits. There is no pay to win.

Apparently you can buy credits with real money, to use ingame, however this is going to be capped either daily or monthly and wont be enough to warrant buying a new ship etc. This is still fairly open to change I think.

Other than that, just keep an eye on the group. Gone a little quiet of late, but generally picks up again.. waves..

Visit the website regularly. There are multiple posts per week with news and info. Also, the community is generally very helpful in answering questions.

If you want to know anything specific, give us a shout.

Thanks guys. Voice Attack looks amazing, definitely going to try that out.

What GPUs and graphics settings are you guys playing on and what kind of FPS are you seeing typically? I'm trying to tweak the settings but not really seeing that much difference between going from 1440p Very High to 720p Low. 1440p is not really playable for me but looks awesome, have mine set to 1080p High now and scrape out 30fps lows. This is on a HD7970.

There is very little customization you can do at the moment wrt graphic settings. I have an FX6300 and an R9 380 4GB, and I run it on Medium at 1680x1050. I normally turn frame rate capping on in the driver settings since my screen tops out at 60Hz anyway. I get a steady 50+ fps in the hangar and Arena Commander. Port Olisar is a bit of a lottery, since performance there is currently very dependent on the server-side. They are working on it.

Quick tip that is almost guaranteed to make a difference: While in game, hit "~" to open the console, then do two things. First, type "r_motionblur 0" [Ent], and then r_Vsync 0 [Ent]. Vsync tends to be on by default, and this will sometimes cap your fps at half your refresh rate.

Either way, Medium should be fine. The game looks awesome even on low. Running on High or Very high kills your frame rate for very little visual difference.

Thanks. Yep I was testing in Olisar, when in my hangar I pretty much get a fixed 60fps at 1080p on high, I prefer leaving vsync on so I don't get tearing. Also noticed that on any quality lower than high you get this weird shadow lag where you shadow is drawn too late and seems to jump around which is a bit annoying.

You can download user.cfg files with all sorts of GFX tweaks to improve FPS. They will eventually build all the crytek tools into SC.

Im running a GTX 970 and game runs quite well. 16gb Ram. Needs lots of optimising though but in Vanduul swarm, get 60+ average.

Olisar still feels like all the objects are loaded in at the start, and not streamed in as you progress through it. This kills frames.

I don't think the Olisar frame rate issues are streaming related. Sure, the texture streaming and other graphical stuff hasn't been optimized, but the major problem seems to be the netcode. My GPU is fully loaded in AC or the hangar, but sometimes idles at 50% while playing the baby PU.

I tried the off-line hack shortly after v2.0 launched, and I got a solid 60fps most of the time. If you connect online however, you get 30 or 40fps on some instances, and 10 to 15 on others. It also appears to be related to how many other players are online and what they are busy doing. All of this will be optimized over time.

@DrJohnZoidberg, here is a great thread on the use of .cfg files for some performance tweaking. Your experience may vary, so be warned.

I managed to get hold of the patch notes for the upcoming Alpha 2.4.

Biggest changes are persistence (meaning the game now saves the state of certain attributes between play sessions), a new system for placing and swapping out equipment, earning alpha credits by completing missions that you can use for buying things, and then of course, things to buy, i.e. shopping.

Shops have been added to both Port Olisar in Crusader, and to Area 18 in the ArcCorp area. You can buy clothes, weapons, flight suits, and armour, for starters.

I made a quick video about the shopping experience, for those who are interested in space fashion:

Can't wait for 2.4.

Just had a great session - had a cool multicrew mission after I had to be rescued from deep space :D Then it was my bright idea to go and disable comm arrays and my connie crew was destroyed by the authorities. Damn this game is going to be cool when it's released.

Totally agree. :-)

Are you on the 2.4 PTU, or was this a current release play session?

Was playing earlier and wanted to get some good looking game footage, caught a killer take off :D (this game just looks awesome though)

HAHAHA! That's priceless! Clearly not that comfy at the controls yet. I remember the feeling well.

Just some more random footage I took clips of.

A multi crew operation that didn't go that smoothly. Our engineer did a really good job with power management though.

Great footage! I love the Connie sooooo much... Multicrew in this game is going to be insanely cool.

I had a good chuckle at the Aurora rescue, I've had to chase mine once or twice as well. Luckily the current use feature means you can magically grab on and get in even from several meters away :-)

I must say, your framerates are extremely impressive. Online play can be very choppy for me at times, but it appears to be mainly server-side bottlenecks. Is 2.3 really this smooth all the time?

The Connie is really cool just really tough using those turrets (bottom one is nearly impossible to hit anything), but I think if your pilot understands how to fly it makes it easier. Can't wait to try out the Starfarer though and the Idris when it comes, those are some big ass ships!

I checked yesterday and I get around 30 - 45 fps in the PU, sometimes it stutters in places but for the most part it's smooth enough. Definitely server side stuff that's causing frame rate dips but I think it also helps having a beefy CPU. I watch a lot of Dan Gheesling's SC videos and I see he also suffers from a lot of frame rate stuttering (even in the 2.3 videos but seems worse in 2.4). Maybe I'm just lucky :D
