Edgier and younger in tone, SGU will take the franchise in a dynamic new direction, appealing to longtime Stargate fans and first-time viewers alike. The two-part premiere of Universe is being directed by Andy Mikita (Stargate Atlantis, Stargate SG-1) and lensed by Rohn Schmidt (The Shield, The Mist). The series is expected to premiere in October 2009.

SGU follows a band of soldiers, scientists and civilians, who must fend for themselves as they are forced through a Stargate when their hidden base comes under attack. The desperate survivors emerge aboard an ancient ship, which is locked on an unknown course and unable to return to Earth. Faced with meeting the most basic needs of food, water and air, the group must unlock the secrets of the shipÂąs Stargate to survive. The danger, adventure and hope they find on board the Destiny will reveal the heroes and villains among them.

The cast includes:

Robert Carlyle stars as Dr. Nicholas Rush, one of the most brilliant scientific minds, whose motives are not what they appear to be.

Lou Diamond Phillips is Colonel Telford, a proud lifelong military man, who puts his faith in the chain of command. Stubbornly confident, heÂąs highly regarded by his superiors. He is the chosen leader of the ill-fated expedition.

Justin Louis portrays Colonel Everett Young, an experienced Stargate team leader. Married, with years of tough decisions under his belt, life has taught him never to take anything for granted. He stays on top of his team so they stay alive.

Brian J. Smith is Lt. Matthew Scott, a junior member of the Stargate team. Green and rough around the edges, he is thrust into the role of leader well before he's ready for the responsibility and must learn to command, earn respect through action, and manage the diverse personalities aboard the ship.

Elyse Levesque stars as Chloe Armstrong, the daughter and aid of a U.S. Senator. Politically savvy, but with a wild side, she is considering following in her fatherÂąs footsteps, until she finds herself trapped on the ship. As tensions rise, her character will be tested and her place among the group revealed.

David Blue stars as Eli Wallace, a total slacker, who just happens to be an utter genius with anything he puts his mind to - mathematics, computers, video games. A lack of confidence has left him with an acerbic sense of humor.

Alaina Huffman portrays MSGT. Tamara Johansen. Unable to afford medical school, the Air Force was the best option for the strong-willed field medic. Faced with the mounting pressure and a lack of in-depth experience, she will be forced to rise to the extraordinary occasion of needing to treat the seriously wounded.

Jamil Walker Smith portrays MSGT. Ronald Greer, a Marine with a temper you donÂąt want to mess with. His past is mysterious but it's clear something dark formed the hard shell around him.

Ming-Na is Camile Wray, a human resources executive with the international oversight committee that governs the Stargate program. Now the highest ranking member of that division left stranded on the ship, she carries herself with a misguided sense of superiority over the other military and civilian survivors.

Brad Wright and Robert Cooper, of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis, will serve as executive producers and writers on the new series.

Stargate Universe will debut as a two-hour movie event on SCI FI and will be distributed by MGM Worldwide Television Distribution.

Hmmm, some hotties there... but is there a story line?

Looks pretty interesting, showed the story to my sister who is a huge Stargate fan and she got all excited about a new Stargate series.

I suppose we have to wait and see if it will be any good.

Yay as a Stargate fan, I can not wait to watch this show. I hope they will finally show us what the Stargates 9th chevron does

I'll probably have to resort to 'sourcing' it online as dstv will probably only look at it like a year or two later ........

As a stargate fan, I can def say that I don't think this will work, I was semi right about about this for Atlantis - I told people (after seeing season 1) on gateworld it wouldn't last more than 4 seasons and it did, but it was really drawn out (final season)

I think it will maybe last 2 seasons.

They are trying to hard to milk the "stargate" franchise and SG-1 did that perfectly.

The problem is a simple one. People enjoy shows as long as the core characters remain.

Atlantis' launch was a huge success because it included Jack O'Neill, Sam Carter, etc. Season 10 of SG-1 still had the core team in tact, making its send off a special one.

Atlantis lost the plot when their field med, Carson Beckett & Sam Carter were pretty much booted... this is the same reason soapies are so boring.

I've been fascinated by Stargate ever since Kurt Russel & James Spader 1st appeared, but I'm sceptic about these "milking-the-franchise" editions coming out...

sga was just one huge clone of sg1 for me...

...lets hope this is fresh and new without some reworked themes like "hey this is how the replicators actually was made"

@ Voicy;

It wasn't only the just the characters, it was the story, for me, each episode felt like they were bringing the story a tiny bit forward and then scratching in the dark.

After season 3, I pretty much lost interest, I wasn't keen on it at all, I only watched season 4 when season 5 started and 3 eps into it... I had given up on it completely.

I heard with UNIVERSE, they are going to try and have characters that rival that of the popular characters in SG-1 & Atlantis so it feels alot like the same, but I still don't think it will work for long.

The 1st few eps are always really good but then it just wonders off into the dark :(

Here's the cast photo...

Well after seeing a picture of the cast I have by doubts.

Stargate was seriously milked from SG1 season 8, I mean WTF were they thinking with the whole ORI saga?

Then Atlantis just went down hill, still have season 5 to watch though.

So sad I used to love this show

Ja, the pic does not really inspire much confidence... but hopefully they will look better in Uniform! :D

Not a bad cast IMO .... a few faces there that could really work in Sci-Fi .... let's hope the writers are up to it though ;)

Richard Dean Anderson Leads Charge Of Stargate Alums To New Universe

http://io9.com/5197253/richard-dean-anderson-leads-charge-of-stargate-alums-to-new-universe

It may be a bold new Stargate Universe, but there's still room for some familiar faces - and the reappearance of Richard Dean Anderson, Stargate SG-1's Jack O'Neill, is just one of many. Spoilers ahead...

Stargate Universe co-creator Brad Wright told Gateworld that Anderson will be appearing in multiple episodes of the new show. He described their relationship with Anderson as "always ongoing" - suggesting Jack O'Neill has plenty of reappearances in his future. Wright mentioned that the actor was on set this Wednesday, where the episode "Earth" is currently filming (there's some discrepancy as to whether this is now the fifth or sixth episode of the series). Anderson's Jack O'Neill has been promoted to a three-star general since his last appearance.

Richard Dean Anderson's return is the latest in a flurry of reports, rumors, and speculation regarding SG-1 and Atlantis characters appearing in the new show, despite the fact that Universe's premise of a stranded crew with no way of getting back to Earth would seemingly make guest appearances a bit tricky. Indeed, most of the current reports of returning stars have clustered around the first episode "Air, Part 1" before the Universe cast gets stuck on the alien starship Destiny and in "Earth", where they use an alien communications device to briefly return home.

Michael Shanks and Gary Jones, SG-1's Daniel Jackson and Walter Harriman, will appear in "Air, Part 1", and Jones has also mentioned he is appearing with Anderson at some point, so either Jones is also in "Earth", Anderson is also in "Air, Part 1", or both. Robert Picardo, who played Richard Woolsey on SG-1 and Atlantis, has also been asked to appear early in the show's run, according to an interview from a while ago.

Then there's the report that both Michael Shanks and Samantha Carter actress Amanda Tapping's appearances at this week's Stargate convention in Vancouver have been moved from Sunday to Saturday in order to accommodate some early Monday morning filming - which may or may not be for Stargate Universe.

There was also an offhand mention, a while back, that Ona Grauer, who played the alien Ancient Ayiana, shares a scene with Justin Louis, Universe's Colonel Everett Young. It just goes to show you - the more things change, the more they stay the same, even when you're trapped on an ancient alien probe traveling to the furthest reaches of the cosmos.

Hooray for Richard Dean Anderson & Michael Shanks!

... where's Christopher Judge though? :(

I just finished watching Stargate Atlantis the other night. The last few episodes were OK. Not amazing. Episode 5x19 was pretty good though! A wraith loose on earth!

Don't spoil it now

I'm still on 5x08 or some such :/
