State capture inquiry begins

R15 million was used to service the contract, the remainder of R172m was pure money pocketed. The officials involved got off literally scot free.

1 was found guilty of Lack of oversight. Got 3 months upaid (SCM Supervisor). 2 were dismissed (SCM Buyers). 3 resigned after they got suspended (Head of SCM, Supply Chain Operations Manager, and an SCM Buyer). The CFO's case is still underway (last time I checked)
Do provide a source when you get a chance, so the two are the only ones who are being prosecuted?

I recall first reading about it when he was outed after posting pics of his flashy cars.

Stories known about years ago are coming up:

Earlier testimony and legal wrangling:

So Peggy survived. There was abuse of power in reviewing and withdrawing the case. And the initial witnesses were probably bought off or intimidated.

This is beautiful but considering his wife acquitted, I suspect he will have bread & butter on table.
Before his arrest, the Asset Forfeiture Unit seized Shabalala’s assets, including the farm, the hotel in Pietermaritzburg, a guest house and two restaurants, said to be worth more than R5m at the time. At one stage, however, it was reported Shabalala was “broke” and Absa Bank had foreclosed on the farm to sell it to recover about R6.5m owing on the bond.

They will never learn that you will always come out second best when doing corrupt things with politicians.

COMMENT: I have no doubt that President Ramaphosa does not love the media after the few weeks he has had around Phala Phala, but it's really quite petty to thank journalists in a way that doesn't really amount to a thank you at all.

- Kyle Cowan

COMMENT: The enormity of this moment should not be underestimated.

Not many democratic governments in the world would open up the entire executive, state and government to this level of scrutiny by the country's finest legal and forensic minds.

When former president Zuma initiated the commission, he did not in his wildest dreams imagine the depth and breadth to which the Commission would go to unearth the plundering of the state he, his friends the Guptas and the ANC oversaw.

President Ramaphosa should be commended for supporting and assisting the work of the Commission, even though it may finally contribute substantially to the ANC he leads losing its majority to govern South Africa.

- Adriaan Basson

Basson gatkruip.

Ramaphosa reiterates that he will present the full State Capture report to Parliament within the next four months - as well as his response to its findings and recommendations.

He says the evidence and testimony given at the Commission will be archived.

Give or take October or November, possibly postponed to 2023? I am more concerned as to when those implicated will be charged… and going by how well the report was received by Ramaphosa I guess he dodged being implicated in cadre deployment and any possible involvement and knowledge during his time as deputy president or in party capacity. Note, this below is a remark,

The final part of the Zondo Report is scathing of the ANC's role in enabling state capture. It analyses cadre deployment, its effect on the hollowing out of state institutions and the party's refusal to act when it became clear that the Guptas and Zuma were working together.

At paragraph 733 in part 6, volume 2, Zondo says the ANC should have realised what was afoot after the Guptas' abuse of the Waterkloof Air Force Base in 2013.

If the ANC acted, it would have saved South Africa "billions of rands".

so... when did the ANC realise that the state is captured?

I am going to put my thoughts to rest since the reports and recommendations still require public analysis.

Electoral reform | In a major finding and recommendation, Chief Justice Raymond Zondo has proposed that South Africa's Constitution be amended to allow the direct election of the president.

"How did the country end up having as President someone who would act the way President Zuma acted? Someone that could remove as good a public servant as Mr Themba Maseko from his position just so that he could put someone else into that position who would cooperate with the Guptas and give them business.

"A President who would fire the Minister of Finance just because his friends wanted someone else in that position who would cooperate with his friends and help them to capture the country; National Treasury.

"Indeed, a President who became party to a scheme created by the Guptas to remove a number of executives from their positions at Eskom so that the Guptas could put their own associates in those positions so as to facilitate the looting of Eskom."

Zondo concludes that our electoral system is flawed because many people wanted to vote for the ANC but not for Zuma as president.

He recommends that the Van Zyl Slabbert report of 2003 on electoral reforms be revisited.

Another 'surprise' finding:
More worrying is the ANCs take - they are above the law

In response to the litigation, the ANC said it was concerning that the opposition would try to take a policy of the governing party to court.

“It’s worrisome that the Democratic Alliance or any other party would want to take an internal policy of the ANC to court.

“Imagine us now coming out and saying that we are taking the constitution of the Democratic Alliance or any of their policies,” ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe told SABC News on Friday.

Yeah, there's already a thread about the response:
