Don`t like services running in the background, using my cpu, memory and bandwidth, trying to sell me stuff, and forcing me to download unnecesary large updates.

You clearly haven't put 2 and 2 together? If I had a picture of my CD key, I would have a CD key and wouldn't need to be retrieving it? I would have been perfectly happy if they said they couldn't help me as i didn't have enought info. But the fact that they wanted a picture of something I was trying to get back from the is retarded.
If retail software is registered to the account, attach a digital photo or scan of the CD Key registered to the account. Write the Steam account username on the quick reference card or CD Key sticker below the code in permanent ink.
Please tell me where this 'retrieve CD key' feature is... as I've never seen/heard of it in my life. They do have a 'retrieve lost account' feature though (when you lose all access or your account gets hijacked), and by the sound of it, that is the one you ended up using here. You did not have access to your account anymore, so you had to prove you are the legit owner of at least one of the CD keys, hence they kept on asking for "Proof of payment":
This is standard practice and I do not get why you are blaming them for this?
Thanks to Steam I dont pirate games anymore... great value for money and I can never lose my games.

It's awesome that I don't have to worry about losing or scratching disks anymore.
I don't like Steam i love it![]()
Well steam is not that cheap. A new game is what 300-350. Granted i don't buy games anymore i download via steam. Do they still sell new pc games for like 300-350 at btgames?
You're forgetting about all the Indie games on steam. Hope you bought Trine. It's on midweek madness.
Another great thing about steam is you don't have to re-install all the games when you re-install windows for whatever reason. Just point your mouse at steam.exe in the old programs folder and everything loads and is there ready to play. Just backup the steam folder and that's it. Toss all your cd's and dvd's for good.

can you potentially install the games onto an external hdd?

Yes, I have Steam on Linux and Windows both pointing to the same External HD. I can also plug it into my laptop and my Steam on laptop points to the HD and all my games are ready to run.
party on wayne.
so do you do this "pointing" in the config, during install, or via symlinks/junction in the filesystem?
interesting.
