Step by step on getting internet.

Hi everyone.

So the technician phoned me just before 10am. I ran home quickly and it was all done and dusted by 10:30 (there was an existing line, they just had to connect it to the exchange).

Should be able to phone out by tonight, I can already receive calls.

Will apply for the DSL bundle early next week.

For now I can at least get in contact with people.

Hi everyone, this is a bit of a bad update but I need to keep this thread updated with everything.

So on friday I was told by the technician after the installation that I am able to receive calls immediately (which I tested myself and I was able too) and will be able to call out by that evening. Well, that was not the case! Sunday late afternoon I was still unable to call out. This is after DM'ing Telkom on twitter to find out what the problem is.

So I hope that they sort it out today and that I can make calls tonight.

Let's hope for the best.

Just got an sms from Telkom saying that my number is ready for use and will be billed pro rata from yesterday. Will check it tonight.

The phone was working 100% :)

Now just waiting for payday to get a teeny bit closer before I apply for the DSL activation on my line as well as the uncapped account from Afrihost (possibly a modem from them as we'll as they apparently pre-load / setup the router with all your info.

So I did the application with afrihost for the 10mps uncapped bundle (that includes the dsl line rental).

Confirmed everything (had to fill in banking details and send them a copy of my ID) and received an email saying that everything is good to go and that we are just waiting on telkom to activate the dsl on my line! :)

I am hoping it gets done by end of next week at the latest.

Will update the thread once it is activated.

Can't contact Telkom with my order number to try and speed up the activation as I am doing this through Afrihost.

Thank you for a helpful thread. I will go thru the same process next week...

Only a pleasure, I wanted to create this thread to help people so if it has helped you at all then that is great!

Once everything is done and I have the internet working at home then I will update the first thread with all relevant information and steps including how long certain things take and costs.

Hoping my internet will be active by next week wednesday/friday! :/ (ordering my router on wednesday, apparently afrihost can preload your information once you have created an account with them. So then you are ready to go as soon as telkom activates the dsl on your line.)

TelkomZA says the line is activated but Afrihost says they are waiting for confirmation.

I have also bought a router from Afrihost as they configure it and that just makes it a lot easier for me. Paid before 12 yesterday. Checked on clientzone and it says that it has been handed to the courier (at about 13:30 today) so I am hoping to get it tomorrow. Was hoping for today but hey... can't have everything.

I spoke to Afrihost thru DM's on twitter and they said that I can confirm that the line is working myself if I plug a router in and can get onto telkom.co.za then I need to contact them to confirm that the line is up and working and they will activate my bandwidth.

So in short, I am waiting to receive my router so that I can test my line so that they can hopefully activate my bandwidth so that I can be up and running for this weekend. Let's hope hey...

Got my router at 10, going home for lunch to test the line, spoke to afrihost via twitter DM's again, they said I can just send them a tweet and they will activate my bandwidth and debit order.

Will let everyone know a bit later today if my line is active (according to telkom it is) and what kind of speeds im getting.

Everything was up and running as of a week ago from today, I will write a post with my experience and costs this weekend and update this thread as well as the first post.

I have been flooded with deadlines at work and have unfortunately not been able to focus on any personal projects for the time being.

this thread has been a great read. I too have been undergoing the process of getting internet, except I have chosen Telkom for an ISP. But unfortunately for me there seems to be an underground cabling problem. So I've been waiting for them to sort this out.

So today I DM'd TelkomZA and they have escalated my order so now I'm gonna have to play the waiting game. It's really frustrating because I made my application on 20 Sept. 2013.

I am therefore hoping that they will be of as much help to me as they were to you.

This morning I received a call from Telkom saying that the underground cabling problem has been sorted out and that a technician will come tomorrow.

Charl and his team are a rather efficient bunch... I hope everything will going smoothly tomorrow.

I'll let you know how that goes.

Okay to update this thread from my side. I have had internet now for two weeks! Telkom STILL has not confirmed that the line is with afrihost.

I luckily phoned Afrihost two weeks ago and asked them to check everything and then tested it once I got my router otherwise I would STILL have been waiting!

My line speed using speedtest.net range everywhere from a very nice and acceptable 8.49 mbps all the way down to 1.79 mbps which is totally unacceptable.

I do not understand the massive fluctuations at all but then again this is why I took the 10 meg line (So that when stuff like this happens I won't have to suffer too much)

I will pull all the info and steps together when I have time and update the first thread!

Some advice for anyone looking at getting a phone line and internet:

Set out about a month for everything. (unless you plan on doing everything thru telkom)

and even once you set out a month... be prepared to chase people a lot!

I found that both Telkom and Afrihost representatives on Twitter and Mybb are extremely helpfull so I almost recommend contacting them via these channels instead of the call centres!

Hope this thread helps anyone looking at getting things done.

If anyone has a question please DM me.

Oh, my line has gone down twice. Once because Telkom apparently worked on something some where and once well... i don't know. Unplugged the router and sorted (first time I needed to contact Afrihost for a port reset).

Not very happy about the state of internet in this country but not going to immigrate because of it. Can only hope that it will get better.

Afrihost and Telkom has actually been great so kudos to them.

On a side note, STAY AWAY FROM VODACOM!!!!! Had major issues with them with getting my Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

If you applied via afrihost why do you expect telkom to confirm?

I have my line with Afrihost as well. They did not charge me for line rental yet as they are waiting for Telkom to confirm that the line is 100% with them. That is WHY I said that they have not confirmed it with them.

Please find another thread to troll.

ponder is a very helpful poster.
I doubt he is trolling.

If that is the case then I apologise for misunderstanding his comments. It has just seemed very counter productive on this thread. I wanted to keep this thread clean so that it is easy for someone to find the necesary information.

I will just update the first thread with all the necessary info when I have a bit of extra time.

My bad, it just sounded like you were waiting for confirmation from telkom and not afrihost.

/saunters off to go find another thread to troll
