Hey guys.

I got a message from: 0840042977

The message read : "Welcome to Go Go Mobile. This is a subscription service charged at ZAR14 every 3 days. To unsubscribe SMS stop to 42977. For help call 0800992230"

I checked on smscode

the short code belongs to

SMS Code: 42977
VAS Rate: Standard
Name: Opera Telecom SA (Pty) Ltd
Telephone: 011-218-5600
Website: http://www.operatelecom.com

I called the help number and spoke to a very unhelpful guy who agreed to take me off the list - but will have to look into and sms me the information of how I got signed up.

Anybody know anything of them?

It's been discussed here. Didn't know it was Opera Telecom. LOTS of complaints about them on hellopeter.

Yup. I was subscribed to Lesbian Sisters @ R7 / day. I SMS'd STOP 3 times, and then the MT's stopped although 2 months later i see im being charged ~R280 / month.

I write them an email, whipping out everything WASPA and mobile in general, demand a refund, and provide my banking details.

They did refund me since I threatened them with a R200k WASPA fine.

It's disgusting that these scumbags can get away with this. We need a class action lawsuit against the cell phone companies.

You can now opt out of third party billing by operators (required by law), but this is not advertised widely. Chances are if you call the call centre of your operator, they will not know about this. It is already used to prevent telemetry devices and point of sale devices (with SIMs) from being billed by 3rd parties.
One of the Vodacom insiders should be able to tell us how to do it?

Yes they do listen, the reason they do is because they get fined very badly if they dont. http://old.waspa.org.za/code/complaints.php

All cases involving them have been upheld and fined. they reason they dont stop is because they make so much money from lazy people that unsub and dont log complaints with the WASP regulatory committee.

The fault also lies with the SP's Vodacom/CellC/MTN who all have WASP policies to enforce that you are actually subscribing to these services the problem is that they dont enforce them.

Vodacoms WASP Policy

http://overendstudio.co.za/websites...ws_article.php?articleID=1141&pid=press_group

I am in the process of taking Vodacom to task regarding this as they re not upholding their own policy.
As you can see by all your posts there is no double opt in being applied even tho vodacom says that if the operator doesn’t use a double opt in policy they wont be allowed to subscribe users on their network, same goes for MTL and cellc they all have the same policy, yet as you can see this is not the case.

If you look at the fines they range anywhere from R10 000 to R150 000, so do your self a favor take vodacom/CellC/MTL and the WASP provider to court, you wont loose.

Hope this helped some of you.
