Hoping someone can shed some light on this. I was recently moved to an MSAN near my house with great line stats. Then my line mysteriously went down yesterday, after a neighbour said there was a technician working there earlier. I finally got through to fault reporting this morning and after logging a fault, my line returned but is now syncing with way worse stats:

Connection Speed 2672 kbps up / 500 kbps
Line Attenuation 39 db / 11 db
Noise Margin 6 db / 6 db

Before it was roughly this:

Connection Speed 4092 kbps / 511 kbps
Line Attenuation 22 db / 4.5 db
Noise Margin 31 db / db

Quite confused as to why this would happen so suddenly, though I am assuming it was something the mysterious technician did...

sum ting wong

I would report that to them, although I think you would have to keep phoning them until you get someone that would actually listen...

that noise margin is a bit low there, way too low for by my standards but I think Telkom would call that "acceptable". still it wasn't like that, they didn't fix it properly in my opinion

The first set of stats look like a connection to the exchange. It's not that bad. You should be able to get 4-8mbps downstream. You can ask them to do a port reset, or to bump up your profile so that you sync at a higher speed. I'm assuming you're paying for a 4mbps line?

The second set of stats look like a connection to an MSAN. Lower attenuation figures generally mean the quality of copper is either better or the length of the copper is shorter.

So it seems your line has been disconnected from the MSAN, and reconnected to the exchange. It could be the technician who did this. If you only have a 4mbps line, then your line stats are good enough to connect directly to the exchange with a stable sync. He might have disconnected you, so that somebody else could have a higher sync speed, perhaps 10, 20 or 40mbps. That MSAN might be full already, and guys syncing at lower speeds would be connected directly to the exchange to allow more users to sync at higher speeds through the MSAN.

That's my guess. But log a fault with Telkom.

Wonder whats happening as i had a drop in line stats this morning very early and only syncing lower than 10mb. Recreating port now..

The exact same thing happened to me a week ago, EXACT, in fact my line stats are almost identical. Exact same noise margin and attenuation. My line wa also down for two weeks, telkom "fixed" it then a few days later my stats suddenly halved. Also 4mb i can now only sync at 2.6mb, and my noise margin went from 14dB to 6dB. I recreated port and what not but didn't help.

An update... shortly after making this post my line went dead and has been until today. Had the number of the technician who manages our area, called him and he came out today and we now seem to be back up on an MSAN and syncing at 10MB.

Connection Speed 10235 kbps 1023 kbps
Line Attenuation 22 db 4.5 db
Noise Margin 21 db 7 db

There are some good people working down there, so don't give up all hope. Wish you guys luck with your internet woes

You lucky your technicians don't put the phone down on you.
