Nope, the latest test by Global NCAP was done on an Indian Swift (like the one we get in SA) that was equipped with airbags and ABS and it still received only 2 stars because the body shell remains unstable.

Basically it says if the car is in a fairly minor accident, the driver and the child in his baby seat on the back seat is sure to be dead or seriously injured.

The car was built cheaply by cutting important safety corners and should never have been allowed on our roads.

I hope Suzuki loses market share through the inferior built Swift. It should be seen in a similar light to the Datsun Go, Renault Kwid etc. Maruti Suzuki apparantly builds cheap tin cans according to comments on the internet.

I bought a Suzuki Ertiga early this year and I'm very satisfied with it, have already done over 17000kms, including one trip of about 3500kms in a week, including about 1000kms with a trailer
 
Well, I did inform the Dealer Principal that the 1.4L engine is slightly under-powered for the long road.

My other gripe is that the fuel tank is quite small - only 40L

So, the bigger engine and slightly roomier cabin would be better, as well as, the infotainment screen.

Actually, I would have preferred the 1.5L diesel engine but, alas, our diesel quality is not good enough, thus, its not available in SA
 
Do you currently have the previous generation Polo? I'm assuming it's the previous gen because you say its build quality is good (all the Polos before it were littered with hard plastics).

Why buy a similar car just to save a bit on fuel? You'll be spending much more than the savings on your new car.

Not really the case any more.

Also diesel at present is more expensive and also more expensive to maintain.

So over a five year period you might very well not win going diesel or more likely it won’t make much difference at all.

Global NCAP says it is still the case that Indian cars are death traps.

Last time I looked (and that was today) diesel still sold at 20 c a liter less than petrol at my local garage while my 150 kw/500 nm SUV consumed below 5.5 l/100 km. The closest a petrol driven car with the same power output can come to that is about 9 l/100 km.

It will therefore take much more than 5 years at an average of 20 000 km per annum before the slightly higher service cost will catch up with the fuel savings.

Diesel is still the best deal. In the European winter diesel prices can go higher than the price of petrol but during our winter the price of diesel is still slightly lower than the price of petrol

I think he's talking only about diesel engines, not Indian made cars. Everyone on the thread knows your thoughts on them.

Not at the coast last time I filled up.

Also are you talking about Power or Torque? Usually diesel's are low on the first. Also which car are you referring to? If it's some crazy half a bar equation then it's not really relevant for comparison in most cases.

OP is talking about small/cheap cars and in that bracket the petrols reign supreme and as also very similar in fuel economy to the average diesel if it's even available at all.

Have you actually used Uber? While incredibly useful for the ad-hoc journey or two; it is frikken expensive over a while. Would be cheaper to rent a car.

That depends on mileage the OP drives every year. You pay a premium for diesel cars. That premium can equate to quite a bit of fuel.

Kw denotes power and nm denotes torque. If I therefore say 150 kw/500 nm it is clear that the power is 150 kw and the torque is 500 nm.

Diesel is also used in the northern hemisphere as heating oil and that is the reason why the diesel price rises during the European winter

For the love of g0d, do not buy a Sandero. Best suggestion so far is the Mazda 2 and I must say, I like the new Figos as well. I10 Grand should be on your list as well.
