Suggestions for a sporty hatchback

Budget max R300k.

I'm strongly considering upgrading from my current Golf 5 GTI. It needs to be fairly new no later than 2013 and low mileage. I test drove a Fist a few years ago and absolutely loved it but the interior of these cars sucks and it didn't feel that big of an upgrade on my car. The Focus ST has a better interior if you get the ST3 but I can't find any for less than 300k and tbh I'm not sold on the looks.

Browsing gumtree i'v come across these two cars. Thoughts on a 2013 Opel Astra OPC?

I think these cars look awesome but how reliable are they?

Thoughts on the renault megane GT? This car seems feature packed but its a Renault.

Just upgrade to Mk7 GTI perhaps if I can find a low mileage one within budget?

I would go with this^^, yes it's a Renault, that's what makes it awesome and good value for money. 162KW, 340Nm will make sure that you don't miss your Golf. Just one thing that bothers me, the coupe version is the one that is beautiful, the four door version will look a little dated if that's what you'll be looking for.

Is that the 92kw or 151kw? The ad doesn't specify.

In any event it's a great car. I test drove one while the wife was finding out more info about the Captur.

Also check with your dealer for deals on demos. The guy who took me on the test drive told me that they just let go of a 2017 demo Megane RS (201kw) with 7,000 km for R370,000. So who knows, you may find a GT closer to your budget...

Im in the same situation, ST3 interior honestly sucks when compared to the mk7 GTI's.There is no competition in the looks department also.GTI wins in every case except for torque and kw.

I love the look of the 135i BUT I don't think I can afford the maintenance cost.

OP's looking for a sporty car, and you suggest the one with the least power?
 
Stop living in 1983 if your mindset is scared of renault. Since the Nissan purchase, they are every bit as good as any thing else on the roads. In every way.

I used to be as well, until I actually went there. But they've really upped their game since those days of fearing French cars. They share a lot of parts with Nissan which has improved reliability a lot.

They're actually offering 7-year unlimited km warranties now on their new models. I reckon if you keep it within the warranty period then you should be fine as far as parts are concerned. Services outside service plan are around R1,500 - R2,000 for a minor and R2,500 - R3,500 for a major.

I would actually be more hesitant to buy Opel than Renault. Renault has a huge dealer network. With Opel, you don't know who's going to own them tomorrow...
 
You will find it difficult to find a MK7 GTI under R300k. You might be lucky and find a high mileage 2013 model, but those were hit and miss with turbo issues. With a R300k budget I would personally look at a Polo 6C GTI (1-2 years old).

Renault hot hatches are brilliant to drive. Very well put together and due to the market fear, you can pick them up cheap.

Is there a particular reason for wanting to change the MK5? Is it just wanting something newer? I ask as I may be in the similar position. I have a MK6 GTI and have been thinking about changing, but I am not prepared to spend R500k on a car, and to spend the same as I did on the GTI I will end up with a cold-lukewarm hatch, hence I am holding onto my MK6 for a bit.

Dual clutch auto in the Renault also. GTI is as kommin as an orgy at a Brakpan family function...

No real reason to change my GTI if i'm honest. Still a nice car to drive, reasonable mileage(just hit 140K) and very reliable so far.

The dream has always been to own a scooby. Thoughts on something like this? Too old?

Dealership network for Subaru sucks ass. There's only 2 in Jhb. So if you don't stay near Bryanston or Edenvale then you're farked.

If it didn't then they would have been my first choice years ago...

You can get a older wrx or sti for between 80k and 200k.Then get it serviced by indepedant mechanics.No need to worry about the dealerships.

Have 2 heavily modified scoobs , and it doesnt bother me that there is only 1 dealership in KZN.Most of the time i buy my parts online from overseas.The only thing it when you do need parts either from the dealership you do sometimes have to wait 3 weeks from Japan.
