Sunette Bridges facebook hate speech case

Racism against whites in not institutionalized and systemic in the world today as is racism against black people.

Narrow minded parochial bulls-t statement. Sorry that's just false. Don't minimse other peoples' suffering. It's racist to elevate the suffering of one group above others. Racism against various white minorities is just as institutionalised, it's just not as easy to see and these groups have lesser PR machines in the US/West.

Perhaps 'your people' would have been equally offended by the term back in the day but these days, when people refer to k....s they are not talking about 'your people'

It's likely his people would not be offended by mere terms because they would have been whipped, raped and molested into submission. Had their heads lobbed off. Their children removed. Etc.

but... if a German walked up to you and called you a Jew, in that context you might feel slightly different.
I doubt there is a Jew on the planet who would take offense at being call just that , no matter who it came from :p
In any case, being jewish has nothing to do with the melanin content of one's skin

You are Afrikaans right ? (Sherlock I know...)

British put Boers in consentration camps and called them rockspiders... that has to mean something to you.

Kafir is an Arabic word meaning disbeliever.... thats us guy.

honestly, rock spider means nothing. but i wasn't the one which was in the camp, which means i didn't experience the oppression myself, maybe that's why rock spider means nothing to me.

She's a long way from being blameless here if you ask me

She as much as admits that one race group in our country is being discriminated against ....and that she is glad of it

That's not how I read that. My take on it is that she's trying to get Bridges to empathise a bit... a futile attempt, I reckon.

Not disputing that... just saying there are lots of derogatory words used for white people. Whites have oppressed whites for longer than whites have oppressed blacks.

The main reason is that not all whites are equal.
SA is different... like with the USA but thats only because it became like that.

History is very broad.. you can't base the assumption on just the last 500 years. There were times when the Egyptians and the Arabs were ruling the world.
It has not always been like it is now.

I always understood rock spider to be more of a class thing.

Although, elsewhere it has a different meaning... :wtf:

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=rock+spider

A term used to refer to a paedophile. In common usage within correctional facilities. Derived from the analogy that a paedophile, like a rock spider, is always getting into little cracks.

Portuguese were often called k-boeties in SA, were'nt they?

Yeah, that's what he said earlier. And that wasn't based on race, which is the crux of a racial slur.

One race actually has to have authority and power over the other for the word to truly become something derogatory in meaning, otherwise it's just a word. People didn't just wake up one day and decide the word k.....r is derogatory, it became that way in meaning because of how it was used for hundreds of years by white oppressors towards blacks - ie, it was meant to be derogatory and 'put them in their place', it was a show of contempt. There are no real racial slurs against white people specifically because they haven't been systemically abused and exploited by other races for hundreds of years...

I'm not sure about that.
The word k.....r was in use in the Eastern Cape in the early 1800s to describe the Xhosa beyond the Fish River who were an opposing force to the colonists. They were independent and certainly not oppressed at the time.
It was only about mid 20th century that it was determined to be derogatory and non-pc.
I have a 1957 copy (school prize) of Jock of the Bushveld where the word occurs a few times.

Yup. South Africans often think they're the centre of the world and that history starts here.
Americans too. Mention slavery and most people think of the transatlantic slave trade. Aside from the fact that slavery was endemic to west Africa (hence Arab and later European traders going there for slaves in the first place) people forget that it made up a fraction of the slavery that was going on at the time and before and after. Africans don't have a monopoly on the "victims of slavery" thing. They certainly aren't exempt from guilt as slavers. To this day Africans are enslaving each other by the thousands as they always have. Europeans got out of the slavery business centuries ago however. They fought wars to abolish it.

Boude slaan. Why can't I have an opinion too?

Of course you can. Just sounded like you read through the thread, and by the tone of your post it sounded like you thought you were going against what everyone else already agreed to. Anyway, don't mind me. As you were.

.
Please give me an example.

Nerfherder, can you confirm this, please. Is the reason you don't get offended by 'mere' terms because you and your family and friends were whipped, raped and molested into submission? Did your parents have their heads lobbed off? Were you removed from your parents or have you had your children removed?

True. Although many American activists of the 19th and early 20th centuries were more worldly. African Americans for example opposed the Tsarist oppressive policies of minorities and saw a bond between their struggle and those struggles.

Open ones would be KKK, UKIP, etc. Speak to Eastern Europeans who go to the US or Canada and see how well they're treated. Don't just assume stuff. Why do you think UKIP emerged now after the flood of Eastern Europeans to the UK?

No. His ancestors would have been whipped and beaten, so would not have taken offence at mere words - sticks and stones as the saying goes. Try to follow. My ancestors too were shipped off as slaves by Arabs, Turks, Mongols, Vikings etc.
