I'm also quite 'happy' to be white - saved me lots of hassles and problems, I'm sure. But I'm not proud of it. Why would I be proud of an accident of birth that is in no way an achievement? Makes no sense to me.

Yes and no, certain minority coloured groups are living up to their Hottentot background as in being Khoikhoi. Years ago our Hottentots Holland mountain was also under dispute, then challenged by the Kaapse Hottentotte to keep the name.

Are there public government bodies, private business corporations (such as media outlets), and universities (public and private), for example, in the UK that actively discriminate and show prejudice towards white people? Are the cities and institutions designed to show preference towards non-whites?

I think you are overstating "to be proud of something", I'm saying "I'm proud of who I am, albeit bald, fat, a ginger, white" I'm not ashamed. If that makes sense. Almost saying proud and ashamed as the only two options.

My whiteness itself wasn't specifically intended, it was just what was going to happen. Incidental is perhaps a better word.

As I said, to me it's neither, it's a physiological fact.

Being white is not an accomplishment or a failing. Why be proud or ashamed of it?

No, SA is still a embedded in white privilege - our very foundations are based on white privilege. Our cities and towns are designed for white convenience and although the apartheid laws no longer exist, white people, generally speaking, still have a higher quality of life and economic security when compared to non-whites. Yes, we do have AA/BEE which some would argue is a form of institutionalized racism but on the whole, whites are doing just fine here. When it becomes common place to see a white person hanging from a tree while others stand around looking happy a smug about the whitey who 'got what was coming', where the law doesn't apply when it comes to whiteys and they are looked upon with contempt as not even human and after 100 years of such behavior, then maybe you will have reason to take offence at racial slurs against white people in SA.
 
It's likely his people would not be offended by mere terms because they would have been whipped, raped and molested into submission. Had their heads lobbed off. Their children removed. Etc.

I don't know if I can... don't know If I agree.

I get offended by different things though. Like when someone addresses me in Afrikaans, because they assume I'm Afrikaans... and then when they continue to do so even after it has been established that we are both better at English.


I think to an extent you choose what to be offended by.
In the US, the N1gger is offensive... so in SA you expect it to be offensive as well ? but its not... its not used in offence or are people taken offence by it.
Same goes with Kafir... in the US most people wont know what it is, even if they do it wont have the same effect.

I knew a guy from DRC that had no issue with the word... he said... "I know its got nothing to do with me".

I find the term "White Trash" offensive, mainly because I hate the assumption that white people can't/shouldn't be poor and that its somehow something only black people can be.

Its as bad as calling a black person a racial slur... its something that is going to become more and more offensive because we now have whites living in shacks and begging in the street.


You can see how offended whites get when Julius Malema refers to them as Boers...
