Are you saying South Africa is a religious and/or police state, but is not acting consistent therewith?
 
Why do people link the WC to crime. I mean, it's not like there won't be any crime if we don't have the WC. The crime rate hasn't gotten any higher because of it. I swear there wasn't the same kind of cr@p said when the RWC or CWC was on so there wont be any difference.

I can't wait for the SWC to come and go so we can get on with our lives...I'm getting sick and tired of hearing the never ending b!tching from the Europeans...If they had their way, the world cup would be hosted only in Europe that way they can be assured of victory as they are yet to win it outside of their continent.

As for crime - I'm not sure I understand you guys who are playing it down. Are you saying that people are lying about crime? Are you saying that they're stupid for getting themselves into these situations? Nobody gives a toss how far you live from "ground zero" or what DIDN'T happen to YOU. The crime here is real, folks. Count yourselves lucky. My brother was in an attempted hijacking on Friday night. That makes 1 successful and 1 attempted for him and 2 attempted for me (amongst other things). There wasn't jack diddly-squat that could've been done to avoid these situations once they started to play out. It's just the way it is here.

That will not change whether we host the world cup or not. So let's not marry the two. We have always had crime and we will have crime during and long after the world cup has come and gone.

Though I do think we'll see some bending over backwards during the event to curb crime - something that definitely won't be happening after the WC.

...and this is something that even those opposed to the world cup should be celebrating. All the extra effort being made, and the raids being done, could well end up breaking the back of the odd organised crime gang. Or at worst result in a few more criminals being brought to justice.

when crime did pick up in our area we took it up, a complete overhaul of the police station took place and now its down, as i mentioned in a thread a while ago i can only remember one attempted hijacking in our area over the last year

i live 10min from the city centre and a stone throw away from cleveland/jeppe
