So stadia all done, with lots of time to spare, test events happening...test events run well...no news here
MATCH's accommodation shortage moving towards being resolved.
Major transport projects on track, even though they may only finish a few months before 2010
Majority of the 1000 new buses ordered, some already in South Africa.
Ticketing, 2 thirds now "sold", with over the counter tickets available in April
Successful hosting of the Confed Cup, Final Draw etc. No incidents!
Fan Fest concept a huge success, successfully launched
Host City Transport Operations plans constantly updated by host cities.
Event Security Operations in advanced stages, with trials runs conducted at most host cities.


sooooo at the end of the day, journalists MUST find something to write about and there is plenty to find. They can't do an Athens 2004 and write about venues that will never be ready on time ...

Now that ticket sales are on track, they will move onto other areas....documentary's shot in informal settlements....crime...lack of flights...more about poverty...hiv...its one big circle

I think you might be confused. PE's stadium was 'finished' in June, and has host 12 events already. See for yourself: Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium :D

Did you see the report on Morning Live? I think you may be confusing it with the stadium being built in Mthatha as a training venue.
 
It was completed in June 2009. Maybe the plants outside the stadium are not growing fast enough.

My South African husband and I have a business specialising in up-market tours from Europe to southern Africa. We are very concerned about the World Cup (WC)....

...So altogether, after initial optimism, the news is NOT good. The authorities are not being honest about what really goes on or they simply don't know about it - which is worse. Let's hope last minute level headedness will save the day.

The question I would ask is whether the behaviour is typical. My impression is that the organisation, like other similar organisations, is heavy-handed and controlling. Is setting prices for accommodation the normal practice? What about the manner in which the tickets are being sold?

With regard to the ticket sales calling it one third not sold is deliberately trying to put a negative spin on it. Maybe it is bad that there are still a third available. I don't know if that is normal. Because of the economic situation we can't even lay the blame on it being held in South Africa (as much as some people would like to).
 
I wonder if some of you guys forget we live in one of the most violent and dangerous countries in the world?

We don't have a few rotten apples, we have hundreds of thousands! Our prisons are packed to overfull capacity, while the police struggle to keep up with arresting people for serious offenses like assault because they don't have the man power to deal with it.

Even recently it was stated there wasn't enough investigators for 50% of murders in south africa.

Now what will they do when something does happen?

a fire, for which we barely have the capability to fight?

unrest, which isn't uncommon in SA. In fact there is at least one riot each week in SA EACH WEEK, but I'm just being negative...

The military, does not have the capacity to patrol our streets. It does not even have the capacity to police itself.

Our police force is ill equipped and corrupt, and maybe one of the WORST paid forces in the world.

Yes this was the best place to hold such an event, I must admit the bribe they got from the ANC must have been substantial.

And that's the WC's fault how, exactly? Come on dude, this has been said before and has become quite boring. We all know that the country has serious problems, we'd have to be retarded not to. These problems would be here regardless of the WC been hosted here or not. If these problems where so big though, how come they have not been so, with other big events held before.

How come this post looks familiar? Oh, it has all been said before. By many other posters on this forum. :whistle:

Just in my circle of friends and family there have been:

* 10 people hijacked
* 2 kidnapped
* 2 got shot at
* 2 assualted
* 3 smash and grabbed
* almost all had robberies at their houses

And those are just at the top of my head.

Thank God that everyone is still alive. But a lot of my friends and family have left the country and a lot are planning to.

With all the crime that has befallen us, who can blame them?

Sheesh, talk about bad luck. I feel ya, dude. But I think past experience has shown that SA can handle big events. Also, this is not the first time in history that SA is having tourists come here, and though some times bad things happen, they do happen all over the world. Some friends that I know went on holiday to England and had a nasty experience there.
