What the rugby guys fail to mention is that they wanted the entire venue in Cape Town under their control which just was not going to happen i.e. no PSL matches, no events that would potentially damage the pitch.

WP rugby actually bid for the stadium but provided such a long list of restrictive conditions that the City of Cape Town just said ...no.

WP Rugby had a vote between its clubs and thats how they decided. They have yet to present a full business plan/feasibility study for why in the medium term Newlands is the preferred option. Thats because there is none.

On another note, any new venue, without a tenant requires a 2-3 year start up period to become established, and build a solid events plan/schedule.
Government should absolutely provide all venues with a start up maintenance allocation for the first 3 years. No point you hand a city R3.4 billion for a stadium but cannot provide R10 or R20 million a year to maintain an asset which you have poured so much money into.



I respect WP Rugby for deciding to stay at Newlands but the rubbish they spew, based almost entirely on sentiment is purely to justify the poor business decision they have made in the short term.
 
Even in the case of Suckcliffe and the Sharks. Durban spent many hours negotiating and trying to plan the venue so that it could be adjusted early on to accommodate them.

SAIL who operate Cape Town stadium own 25% in the commercial arm of WP Rugby and 50% of the Blue Bulls union .Its ludicrous to suggest that they simply ignored the "rugby bosses".

You should have just stopped there. As a member of the mifddle class who will be paying for an empty stadium for the next five years it is the least you can do. Sadly "Zille's Legacy" is going to be a drain on us for many years to come.

how can u expect them to live without bonuses? thats very unreasonable. they have been screwing soccer for so long. i'm still waiting to hear what will happen with that billion they made. how much everyone got for bonuses.
 
This is what happens if you have imbecile's making the decisions based on their private "income" as "bonuses. I am so glad, maybe they can convert these stadiums in some sore of "camps" for the illegal immigrants!
 
It is surprising to see that the WC stadium debate is getting so little attention from "the opposite side", the optimists, whatever you want to call them.

We had a discussion on this in the beginning of the year and mention was made that the stadiums will become white elephants and someone raised the point that Durban stadium was so profitable, they have that cable car thingy that takes you to the roof of the stadium and it has brought in millions even before the stadium was complete.
I wish I could find that discussion again, my searches yielded nothing so far, so that we can compare the two and see what has changed and what fears have materialized so far.

Then again, just arrange more tours in Durban, it worked the beginning of the year? /sarcasm

They should have spruced up the old stadia and use these instead of wasting millions on new, useless stadia. :rolleyes:

I live in Cape Town so her stadium affects me the most. One of the things she lied about was areas that were supposed to be grassed recreational areas ended up getting tarred over. Basically she presented falsified plans to the rates payers societies to get it approved. She can be just as honest as any ANC politician when she wants to get her own way.

Technically, it is Nomaindia's legacy rather than Zille's legacy. Nomaindia approved the stadium just before she left office. In reality, there was little that Zille could do.

Yes, a stadium may not be one of the first needs someone has but it is part of any big city. Yes, we had Kings Park but it was starting to get the feeling that it was very piecemeal with all the extensions it has had over time. I'm sure it could have been renovated at great expense. Your taxes have not gone up in the past few years so there is no extra pain for you anyway. What else would you like them to use it on? No one is ever happy seeing their money being spent but that is life. Taxes are here to stay.

This article at least shows that the stadium that you have spent "your" money on (EDIT : oops wait you are in CT ;) ) is capable of creating a sustainable income going forward. It has also given Durban something like the Eiffel Tower. Something tourists want to see and go up. (And I eagerly await a thrashing from those questioning how I can even compare the two.)
