Sweet spot for socket 775 chips now?

I may need to get another processor for my kid's computer. It is an Asus P5PE-VM motherboard. Used for Gaming, with an Nvidia Card... but not cutting edge (I don't buy the VERY latest games for them). I am aiming around the 2.4 Ghz mark or higher (not more than 2 grand). Is there a good price/performance mark I should be aiming at? Which chips should I avoid? They used to have a Celeron 3 Ghz (I think).
 
All I know is that the E2*** chips, like E2180, overclock like crazy.

Ummm I have the P5PE-VM and it does not overclock at all with no pci/agp lock so even software such as clockgen dont work.

The only way to overclock is to bsel pad mod it, which involves drawing a small line on the cpu pins to change its default fsb to 1066 or 1333.

I have a E4300 1.8ghz which is now running at 2.4ghz(1066fsb since that m/board only supports up to 1066) with bsel.

If u can get any E2160 or E4300, this mod will make it run perfect (sped, heat, risk) - wise.

Is your R2000 limit for the CPU only? If only for the CPU then the Q6600 will work for you. They go for around R2000. Altho I'm not sure what limits are for an 865G chipset motherboard. a Q6600 should be able to run.

If you need a CPU and G-card then you may have a problem. That motherboard only has an AGP slot and getting AGP G-cards now will be a mission.

Ja, no.. it is just the CPU. I already have a nice Nvidia graphics card... nice enough for the kiddies.

if new then the Q6600 will be the best, the m/board doesnt support X6xx cpus so highest u can go is a E6850 or something like that.

Though for the kiddies rather get him a E2220 or E4600, should be enough and can overclock in future when he get better board

Like I said, E2220 or E4600 :)

I was gonna say the E7200 but that dont work and the pentium D's suck coz I used one before.

what agp card did u get him?
 
In that situation a 2nd hand CPU might also be worth considering. Sooner or later you'll have to ditch the board anyway so it might make sense to not go all out now & then buy something nice later.
 
Get a new motherboard and core2duo chip. If not, don't change the chip.
Remember that your motherboard is the base on which your system run. If it's slow, everyting will be slow.
