Hi, I am interested in switching from my current MWEB/Vodacom 3G contract, with 5GB of data monthly, to an ADSL line. I am interested in a higher cap, what would be the steps to follow if I want to apply for ADSL. I do not have a Telkom line, as I have only stayed in my current home for a few months now. I also want to get a very reliable, configurable and possibly Wireless N compatible (maybe wireless N) router, that doesn't have insane pricing. My current 3G contract is R1049pm, so I don't want to pay anything above that. I was thinking maybe 10GB monthly, if that is possible.

Has the contract been fulfilled? I'm not sure how to go about the altering a contract routine, best to ask your operator.

About the ADSL line, you'll have to install a telephone line, and get it activated for adsl (if you want to do through telkom) Then get another ISP, because Mweb or Telkom charge both arms and legs for cap, esp if you're looking around the 10GB mark.

I was thinking of going for the Afrihost R29/GB deal. The contract is almost over. What would be a good router?

Apply for a new line with Closer 1, which gives you free installation. Once the line is installed, apply for ADSL with the self-install option. You can buy the router while you are waiting for Telkom to activate your ADSL.

If Afrihost still has their special, you can get 10GB for R290/month (IS network). This, together with the analogue and ADSL line hire from Telkom will come to just under R900/month. You could look at the D-Link 2740U, which has a 4-port built in switch, ADSL modem and Draft N wireless. Going for just over R1300 at Sybaritic.

Thanks, I'l check it out.

I just got a letter from Telkom telling me that they can't give me a telephone line in my area (I live in a complex just outside of Nelspruit). Both of my neighbors have a working Telkom line, why can't I get one? I called them, they said I will never have a regular Telkom phone line because there isn't enough demand for a line in my area, or something like that.

So does anyone have any alternative connections in mind? I want something uncapped (not very likely) with 384kbps ADSL speeds. Possibly a connection with lots of space to download.

Seeing that Telkom won't give you a line, there is neotel for R999. Check their website.

Q: How does Telkom determine there's not enough demand if they're turning customers away? Dumb sh*ts.

I don't have Neotel coverage.

A: I agree.

No telkom, no neotel, buy yourself a big bottle vaseline because you going to need it.

Two thoughts come to mind.
1. Are you renting? With the (non-ADSL) prices you may be facing, it may be cheaper to move house again.
2. How far away are these neighbours that have phone lines? What about getting together with one of them (if they are within range) and setting up a wireless link?

Just my R0.02 worth

1. No, built the house.
2. They are about 20m and 40m.
